Job Description Shift: Monday to Friday am to pm.
Responsibilities: - The Packaging Process Engineer plays a critical, hands-on role in supporting Engineering and Operations within a GMP-regulated pharmaceutical packaging environment. This position is heavily focused on packaging equipment performance, integration, and optimization across labeling, cartoning, serialization, and syringe assembly operations.
- The engineer will work directly on the production floor to troubleshoot equipment, improve line efficiency, and support new product introductions.
- This is a client-facing role with responsibility to lead Commercial Technology Transfer activities and must be % present, on-site, at the Allentown facility.
Key Responsibilities: - Troubleshoot and optimize packaging equipment including labeling systems (vial and syringe), cartoners, serialization systems, and assembly equipment
- Lead packaging line setup, changeovers, and carton size evaluations to improve throughput and reduce waste
- Drive improvements in line performance (OEE), equipment reliability, and operational efficiency
- Partner with OEMs and vendors to resolve mechanical, controls, and integration issues
- Evaluate and implement carton and label artwork changes, ensuring compatibility with equipment and regulatory requirements
- Support capital equipment projects including specification development, vendor selection, FAT/SAT, and commissioning with a focus on equipment performance
- Lead and support packaging-related technology transfers for new and existing client products
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Quality, and clients to resolve packaging challenges and improve workflows
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives focused on packaging line efficiency, quality, and cost reduction
How will you get here? Applicants should possess at least – years of engineering experience in a cGMP-controlled environment, with a strong preference for pharmaceutical or medical device packaging operations.
Required Experience: - Hands-on experience with pharmaceutical or medical device packaging equipment, including: Labeling systems (print & apply, wrap labeling, vision inspection systems) Cartoning equipment (horizontal/vertical cartoners, carton forming and closure) Serialization and aggregation systems (Track & Trace) Syringe assembly and secondary packaging operations
- Proven experience troubleshooting high-speed automated packaging lines
- Experience with packaging line integration and material flow optimization
Preferred Experience: - Experience with carton and label artwork, including dielines, barcode placement, and print tolerances
- Familiarity with vision systems and inspection technologies
- Experience working directly with OEMs and packaging equipment vendors
General Responsibilities: - Ensure full compliance with GMP standards, site safety practices, and company values (Integrity, Intensity, Innovation, Involvement)
- Support multiple packaging projects and technology transfers simultaneously
- Contribute to equipment qualification activities (URS, FAT/SAT, commissioning), with primary focus on equipment performance and integration
- Assist in root cause investigations and implementation of corrective actions related to packaging equipment issues
- Perform additional duties as needed to meet business and operational objectives
Education: A four-year Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Packaging, Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering or a related field is required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: - Strong hands-on mechanical and troubleshooting skills with packaging equipment
- Deep understanding of labeling, cartoning, and serialization processes in a regulated environment
- Experience diagnosing issues related to label placement, adhesion, barcode readability, carton defects, and equipment jams
- Understanding of how artwork and packaging materials impact equipment performance
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, SMED, and structured problem-solving methodologies
- Ability to work effectively on the production floor and collaborate with cross-functional teams
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to interface with clients and explain technical concepts
- Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word) for data analysis and reporting
Physical Requirements: Ability to occasionally lift up to lbs. and perform activities such as bending, reaching, and standing as needed.
