Job Title: Allied Sterile Processing Tech Profession: Sterile Processing Tech Specialty: Sterile Processing Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Evenings Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician License: N/A Certifications: Certified Sterile Processor (HSPA or CBSPD), BLS (American Heart Association ONLY) Must-Have: - Certified Sterile Processor (HSPA or CBSPD) - BLS - Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician - Large hospital experience (500 beds or more) - Travel experience (6 months) - Two professional references from the last two assignments Description: The Department of Sterile and Materials Processing is a state-of-the-art instrument processing and sterilizing facility. The Sterile Processing Department assists in the decontamination, High-Level Disinfection (HLD), assembling, sterilization, and distribution of clean and sterile surgical instruments, trays, and pans. These functions are performed using state-of-the-art decontamination, HLD, and sterilization capital equipment. Instruments, trays, and pans are assembled, processed, and distributed to multiple operating rooms, procedure units, and clinics. The tracking of these instruments, trays, and pans is managed through a bar code system. Responsibilities: - Inspects, assembles, packages, and sterilizes surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts. - Selects the method of packaging and sterilization according to established protocols. - Examines surgical instrumentation for cleanliness, proper assembly, and function. - Assembles instrument sets ensuring the appropriate number and type of instruments per program protocols. - Handles instruments appropriately to ensure sterilization and completes count/supply sheets to document the contents of the tray. - Follows established procedures to package and wrap trays and instruments to guarantee sterilization. - Operates steam sterilizers in accordance with established procedures and checks time, pressure, and temperature gauges frequently. - Loads and unloads sterilizers and places items on shelves for distribution. - Performs simple maintenance of sterilizers such as cleaning drain baskets. - Assures sterility is achieved by preparing cultures, reviewing test packs processed, interpreting the results, and completing required documentation. - Checks and adjusts medical equipment according to specific procedures to ensure instruments and equipment operate according to specifications prior to issuing. - Sends all equipment not meeting specifications to the appropriate area for repair. - Decontaminates surgical instruments and equipment following established procedures. - Prevents cross-contamination according to protocols. - Sets up decontamination equipment for operation, cleans, and disinfects equipment and work areas upon completion of shifts. - Handles infectious waste and linen according to established protocols. - Receives and stores supplies from vendors and hospital areas. - Checks stock as it is received against requisitions and documents stock received, reporting discrepancies. - Assists in maintaining par levels of inventory. - Documents and fills orders for surgical supplies for patient care areas and delivers supplies when warranted. - Maintains records of equipment inventory use, frequency of servicing, and equipment not meeting specifications that are referred for repair. - Responsible for quality assurance on all sterile supplies and instruments. - Performs daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts. - Responsible for critical documentation such as biologicals and sterilizer load sheets.
