The supervisor provides both technical and non-technical leadership to leads and individual contributors, ensures efficient workflows, and plays an active role in growing the business while successfully executing current projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strong technical leadership and training in Protection & Control Engineering to the department, including one-on-one mentorship and coaching for team leads.
  • Establish, monitor, and maintain quality control standards for all design services, engineering standards, and deliverable products.
  • Monitor and manage budgets and schedules for all projects and workflows using designated systems and tools.
  • Hold teams accountable for meeting project estimates provided to customers and ensure that change orders are issued accurately and in a timely manner when scope changes occur.
  • Ensure teams meet project schedules and deadlines, proactively identifying and addressing risks to timelines.
  • Directly manage leads and individual contributors within the department, providing clear direction, feedback, and performance expectations.
  • Collaborate with internal leads and customer stakeholders to refine and drive business processes that support efficient and effective workflows and workload distribution.
  • Engage with customers to understand their needs and work closely with internal teams to ensure processes run smoothly and expectations are met.
  • Distribute incoming workflow from the customer to internal leads and oversee allocation of work across their teams, ensuring all projects pass through the supervisor for coordination.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with the customer to address problems, inefficiencies, and process issues, maintaining strong and transparent communication.
  • Resolve issues related to invoicing, resourcing, and staffing to support project delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Facilitate resolutions to disagreements between the customer and internal team regarding processes, technical issues, and project execution.
  • Proactively address personnel matters, including hiring, termination, promotions, demotions, attendance concerns, scheduling, and performance reviews.
  • Use Microsoft Office and customer-specific software and applications to manage projects, track metrics, and complete daily tasks.
  • Drive the professional development and training of the team through collaboration with leads and help identify and implement training needs and opportunities.

Essential Skills

  • Extensive technical knowledge and hands-on experience in Protection and Control (P&C) engineering for electric substations.
  • Proficiency with relay settings, one-line diagrams, fault studies, and fault analysis for utility and substation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage engineering teams in a utilities or utility services environment.
  • Strong background in engineering supervision and engineering management within substation or utility-focused projects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain quality control standards for engineering design services and deliverables.
  • Proven capability to manage project budgets, schedules, and resources using designated systems or tools.
  • Effective communication skills for interfacing with customers, resolving conflicts, and serving as a liaison between internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn and use customer-specific software and applications.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience engineering and managing electric substation protection and control systems projects.
  • 4+ years of experience leading or supervising a technical design or engineering team.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license, or the ability and willingness to obtain a PE license within an agreed timeframe.
  • Experience working with utilities or utility services organizations on substation and protection and control projects.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor, train, and develop technical staff and team leads.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle personnel matters such as performance management, staffing decisions, and scheduling.
