Job description

Our client is seeking a thoughtful and visionary Executive Director to lead the strategic direction and continued development of the organization, ensuring it fulfills its mission now and into the future. The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall success of the organization and will work collaboratively with the Board of Directors and agency staff to manage and grow programs in an effective and financially sustainable manner and establish and implement the organization’s long-term strategic plan.

The Executive Director must have a strong understanding of nonprofit management and provide leadership that supports the organization’s culture and diverse staff. This individual will also be responsible for effectively communicating with community partners, donors, and governmental funders while serving as an advocate for solutions supporting unhoused individuals and families throughout Eugene, Springfield, and surrounding communities.

Essential Duties: Must demonstrate the ability to perform the following responsibilities with or without accommodations.

Leadership and Vision: The Executive Director has overarching responsibility for ensuring the ongoing excellence and financial viability of the organization’s programs while providing leadership to agency staff. The Executive Director must be able to adapt their management style to empower members of the senior leadership team, including leaders overseeing Development, Finance, Housing Services, and Behavioral Health, while recognizing and leveraging each leader’s expertise. The Executive Director is also responsible for integrating and upholding diversity, equity, and inclusion principles throughout the organization’s work.

The Executive Director will ensure daily operations are efficiently executed while simultaneously building a strong foundation for future growth and development. This individual will monitor progress toward the organization’s strategic plan and regularly evaluate the effectiveness and financial viability of programs, including partnering with senior leadership to develop standard operating procedures for each department. The Executive Director will work with staff to build and maintain a culture of respect, shared vision, and trauma-informed care.

Board Governance and Strategic Planning: The Executive Director will advise and build alignment with the Board of Directors regarding the governance and strategic direction of the organization. In partnership with the Board, the Executive Director will lead the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.

The Executive Director will set agendas for Board meetings and ensure timely, appropriate, and transparent communication with the Board, particularly regarding risk management, operations, organizational finances, metrics, and key performance indicators. This individual will also lead the Board and staff in implementing fundraising strategies, maintaining policy compliance, and supporting committee work.

Communication: The Executive Director must communicate effectively across the organization and with the Board of Directors, community members, contractors, funders, and other external stakeholders regarding the organization, its programs, and the individuals it serves. The Executive Director’s communication style should be transparent while demonstrating sound judgment regarding when, where, and how information should be shared.

The Executive Director will articulate and inspire public support for the organization’s mission, particularly when working cooperatively with contractors, community partners, and government officials to advance housing and behavioral health priorities.

This individual must also communicate effectively with varied audiences and through multiple mediums regarding issues surrounding poverty, homelessness, health disparities, mental health, and related community needs.

Administration: The Executive Director will build, support, and maintain an effective leadership team through training, coaching, and professional development; providing appropriate tools for efficient work practices; utilizing data to improve organizational performance; and developing succession plans for key roles.

The Executive Director will promote strong professional practices throughout the organization’s primary functional areas, including finance, human resources, resource development, behavioral health, and facility and asset management.

Fundraising: The Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Development Director to raise funds supporting operational expenses and any future capital campaigns. The Executive Director is responsible for building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors, business sponsors, and other funders and will actively participate in fundraising efforts through donor solicitation, special events, community engagement, and review of grant proposals.

Programs and Operations: The Executive Director will work with the Board, staff, and other stakeholders to ensure the organization’s programs and activities effectively support its mission, goals, and objectives.

The Executive Director will ensure the organization meets all applicable legal and regulatory requirements, including federal and state regulations, industry and compliance standards, and contractual obligations while maintaining efficient operations.

The Executive Director will also be responsible for negotiating and reviewing current and future agreements with funders and advocating for agreements that support the long-term sustainability of the organization’s programs.

Financial Management: The Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Finance Director and hold ultimate responsibility for the organization’s financial oversight. The Executive Director must demonstrate competence in interpreting financial documents, including budgets, cash flow statements, income statements, balance sheets, and statements of functional expenses. This individual will also lead the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.

Other Duties: As assigned.

5. Qualifications, Experience, and Education:

The Executive Director should have demonstrated leadership, coaching, organizational management, and relationship-building experience.

Education and Experience: A candidate must have a minimum of a master’s degree or equivalent in a related field or 4+ years of related experience in an administrative capacity within a nonprofit organization. Relevant work experience should demonstrate progressive levels of responsibility, with preference given to candidates who have participated in successful fundraising efforts or comparable activities demonstrating transferable fundraising skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Professional Qualifications: To perform this position successfully, the candidate must be able to fulfill the responsibilities outlined above and maintain a regular in-person presence at the organization’s facilities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate mature reasoning and decision-making abilities; a track record of organizational change management and consensus-building; experience with strategic planning; an ability to build and maintain trusted relationships; flexibility in working with diverse work styles; and strong cultural competence.
