Job description

Mechanical Design Engineer – Sustaining Engineering

Location: Edinboro, PA; Columbus, OH

Who Are We?

At Vertiv, we’re on a mission to empower the people who power the future. From life‑saving healthcare systems to high‑performance computing, we design, manufacture, and service the products and solutions that keep the world connected. With over $8 billion in annual sales and operations in more than 130 countries, Vertiv is uniquely positioned to deliver greater value to our customers and create new opportunities for our people.

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer – Sustaining Engineering to join our engineering team, supporting existing data center rack, enclosure, and infrastructure product lines throughout their lifecycle.

Position Summary

As a Mechanical Design Engineer – Sustaining at Vertiv, you will be responsible for supporting, maintaining, and continuously improving existing products in production. This role requires strong technical ownership, practical problem‑solving, and the ability to work independently with limited supervision while collaborating with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customer‑facing teams.

You will focus on resolving design, manufacturing, quality, and field issues while driving cost, quality, and reliability improvements across released products.

Responsibilities

  • Support released products through ongoing sustaining engineering activities, including issue resolution, design updates, and product improvements.
  • Investigate and resolve manufacturing, quality, and field issues using structured root‑cause analysis techniques.
  • Develop and release updated 3D models, drawings, and documentation using Autodesk Inventor, with secondary support using PTC Creo.
  • Create, review, and execute engineering change orders (ECOs) to address product corrections, cost reductions, and manufacturability improvements.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing engineering, suppliers, quality, and operations to implement changes effectively.
  • Support cost‑reduction initiatives, part standardization, and component substitutions.
  • Maintain BOM accuracy, drawings, and product data within ERP and PLM systems.
  • Apply lessons learned from issues and field feedback to prevent recurrence and improve product robustness.
  • Balance responsiveness to production and customer needs with disciplined engineering change control.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • 3–5+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably in sustaining, product development, manufacturing engineering, or production support roles.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling; Autodesk Inventor required, Creo preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision in a production environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience designing and supporting sheet metal enclosures and assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of laser cutting, punch press, press brake, welding, and powder coating processes.
  • Experience supporting high‑volume or configurable products in production.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle PD Cloud or Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Experience with PLM tools such as Autodesk Vault, Windchill, or Agile.
  • Familiarity with data center, ICT, or technology infrastructure products.
  • Experience with automation or scripting tools such as iLogic, , Python, C#, or C++.
  • Understanding of applicable regulatory, compliance, and industry standards.

What Will Make You Successful?

  • Strong ownership and accountability for existing products.
  • Practical, hands‑on problem‑solving mindset.
  • Ability to prioritize and respond quickly to production and customer issues.
  • Collaborative approach across manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams.
  • Continuous improvement mindset focused on reliability and cost.
