Position Information Position Title: Faculty, Biological Sciences Department Biology Appointment Type: Annually Renewable FLSA Exempt Position FTE 1.0 Location Albany Campus, Albany, OR Salary Grade Not Applicable Salary Rate $70,753 – $81,191 for a 168-day schedule. Job Summary: The Department of Biological Sciences at LBCC serves students majoring in science-related programs such as biology, zoology, botany, pre-med, pre-pharmacy, and wildlife science; students in non-science programs such as business, education, and agriculture; and students in professional-technical programs such as nursing and diagnostic imaging. Teaching responsibilities may include any of the following: Anatomy & Physiology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, and General Biology for non-majors. Course assignments may include day, evening or weekend classes on the Albany main campus or at the other LBCC campuses. The biological sciences faculty workload also includes student advising, curriculum development, serving on a variety of committees, and student recruitment. Essential Duties:
- Participate in the Instructional Strategies Institute during the first year of employment.
- Teach a wide range of department course offerings dependent on departmental needs, in a variety of formats, including in person and online. Deliver instruction using learner-centered strategies. Course assignments may include day, evening, or weekend classes.
- Identify learning outcomes and use them to develop course outlines and syllabi.
- Develop, deliver, and evaluate classroom activities and lectures using appropriate techniques, technology, and equipment.
- Develop, adapt, evaluate, and improve departmental curriculum and laboratory exercises.
- Develop and administer appropriate instruments for assessing student progress and competence, and use evidence of student learning to revise curricula and improve instruction.
- Keep accurate grades, attendance, and other job-related records. Be available to students and advise students regarding academic programs.
- Work with the department to develop, implement, and assess long-term vision and specific outcomes for department courses and programs.
- Work effectively with students and staff of different cultures, learning styles, skill levels, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, ages, disabilities, sexual orientations, and religious backgrounds.
- Create and maintain a learning environment that inspires and facilitates student learning.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written English.
- Work with the Biology Department to align the department’s planning and goals with the College’s mission, core themes, and strategic goals.
- Help to oversee planning, selection, and purchasing of equipment and materials.
- Participate in professional development that aligns with instructional needs of the College to fulfill its mission.
- Actively participate in the affairs of the department, division, and college, which includes regularly attending department meetings and collaborating effectively with colleagues.
- Engage in professional collaboration with peers in curriculum work and other department, campus, or community projects.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Requires the ability to work with staff and students. Work is performed in an office or classroom setting with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards. Education and Experience Master’s degree, or a minimum of 27 graduate quarter hours or 18 graduate semester hours in Biological Sciences, Anatomy & Physiology, or a closely related field, plus experience teaching at college-level. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Current knowledge of biological principles supported by coursework with knowledge and/or experience related to comparative anatomy and physiology. Evidence of excellence in teaching. The ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with department staff and support department policies and initiatives. Commitment to teaching freshman/sophomore transfer and two-year professional-technical students and courses. Experience with innovative approaches to teaching, and demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop and implement new lessons and curriculum. Evidence of flexibility, integrity, good communication skills and commitment to collaboration. Experience as instructor of record for biology courses offered at college level, and science education courses may be favorably considered. LBCC is committed to the principles of Oregon Pay Equity. Faculty starting salaries are placed on a range determined by the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, and dependent on experience. Progression on the salary schedule is subject to the terms and conditions laid out in the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement.
