About the Role
The Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC) is the backbone of Massachusetts’ municipal utilities — empowering local communities with reliable, affordable, and increasingly innovative power supply solutions. As the energy landscape accelerates into a more complex, technology-driven future, we’re expanding our capabilities and growing an ambitious Market Management & Planning team ready to meet that challenge. We are seeking a Lead Commodities Analyst to help shape the strategic direction of our Members’ power supply portfolios. This role goes beyond analysis — it is a chance to influence market strategy, optimize resources, and drive decisions that directly support the long-term resilience of municipal utilities across Massachusetts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Power Supply Strategy: Build and evolve MMWEC’s short- and mid-term power supply programs; presenting physical and financial hedging strategies and energy derivative pricing to Member Systems.
- Portfolio Management: Conduct structured analysis of resource mixes to identify risks and diversification opportunities while monitoring forward markets to reduce or stabilize power costs.
- Asset Optimization: Maximize the economic and operational value of Member and MMWEC assets across ISO-NE markets; serving as a backup bidder for Stony Brook and MMWEC assets.
- Reporting & Forecasting: Prepare and analyze Power Portfolio Cost Reports and Asset Performance Reports, ensuring the accuracy and quality of all data distributed to stakeholders.
- Rotational Operations: Participate in daily rotational duties including Peak Demand Forecasting, Remote Dispatch, and EV charging scheduling.
You’re a Great Fit If You Have:
- Technical Education: Bachelor’s degree in Math, Science, Engineering, Economics, or a related technical discipline.
- Industry Experience: 3–7 years of relevant experience in energy markets, commodities, or heavy-duty analytics.
- Advanced Tech Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required; SQL or other database experience is preferred.
- Analytical Depth: Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret conflicting data and meet tight market deadlines.
- Communication Skills: Ability to translate complex market concepts into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences and Member expectations.
Why Join MMWEC?
- Hybrid Work: Enjoy a flexible work environment that balances in-office collaboration with remote productivity.
- Impactful work powering Massachusetts communities through sustainable energy.
- Comprehensive benefits including medical and dental with low employee costs from day one.
- Retirement Security: 6% company contribution plus up to a 3% company match.
- Generous Time Off: 11 paid holidays plus earned vacation and sick time.
- Professional Growth: Tuition reimbursement and professional development opportunities.
