Programming & Outreach Library Associate - Demarest Free Public Library
Summary: The Programming & Outreach Library Associate plays a key role in developing and delivering engaging programs and outreach efforts that connect the community to the library. With a primary focus on adult programming, this position plans, promotes, and implements educational and recreational events for all ages, fosters community partnerships, and enhances the library’s visibility through creative marketing. The ideal candidate is an avid reader, passionate about the role of library as a community anchor, as well as an organized, innovative individual with strong communication skills and a passion for community engagement.
Reports to: Library Director
Primary Responsibilities:
- Plan, promote, and execute informational and recreational programs, with a primary focus on adults while supporting family and youth initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Youth Services Librarian on library-wide and family-focused programs.
- Lead and facilitate recurring programs, including the monthly cook book clubs, book clubs and monthly art display.
- Develop and implement new community and sustainability-focused programs.
- Represent the library at community events to foster partnerships and increase outreach.
- Collaborate with the Information Services Associate in marketing materials and contribute to social media, press releases, and the digital newsletter.
- Curate library displays and art exhibits to promote materials and services.
- Prepare monthly adult program reports and contribute to the bi-annual library newsletter.
- Coordinate monthly artist displays and prepare related press materials.
- Collect and report program attendance statistics.
- Assist at the circulation desk as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Library Director.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- High level of proficiency with social media platforms and library technology.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively while meeting deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Customer service skills with the ability to engage diverse community members.
- Familiarity with reader’s advisory services, particularly for adult patrons.
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and push/pull up to 80 pounds on wheels.
Qualifications:
- 1-2 years of experience in event planning or outreach; library experience preferred.
- Enrollment in or consideration of an MLIS program is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with BCCLS consortium policies and LEAP software is a plus.
Schedule & Compensation:
- 35 hours per week.
- One evening per week and one Saturday per month required (two Saturdays preferred).
- Flexible scheduling is strongly preferred.
- Salary meets NJLA minimum.
