The following position is being posted for the upcoming, - school year.

DESCRIPTION: Full-Time Secondary Junior High School Math and Science Teacher

LOCATION: Meridian Junior High School

STARTING DATE: August 19, following School Calendar

QUALIFICATIONS:
Certifications/License: State of Michigan Secondary Math and Science Certification, 6th-12th grade, preferably Math (EQ) or (EX) and Integrated Science (DI) or Science (DX)
Education: Bachelors (BA or BS) from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment
Applicants must meet highly qualified requirements of No Child Left Behind Endorsement
Relevant teaching experience

RATE OF PAY: Per Master Agreement between the Meridian Public Schools Board of Education and the Meridian Education Association

SUPERVISOR
/REPORTS TO: Junior High School Principal

JUNIOR HIGH TEACHER

DISTRICT-WIDE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

SUMMARY:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaches Math and Science, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education through the lens of project based learning.
  • Develops and administers middle school curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual students needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual small group instruction as needed.
  • Instructs students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other schoolwide learning outcomes such as collaboration, verbal communication, written communication, and agency.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the schools standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school
  • Coordinates with other middle school professional staff members, especially within grade level and specific subjects, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles
  • Knowledge of middle school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught
  • Knowledge and experience with project based learning , but training on P.B.L. will be provided
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Knowledge of relevant technology, data information systems, data analysis and formulation of action plans.

TRAVEL REQUIRMENTS:
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings/trainings as required.

EQUIPMENT USAGE:
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, and telephones.
Uses scientific lab equipment and chemicals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward with hands and arms. Moderate concentration/intensity, which includes prolonged mental effort with limited opportunity for breaks. Average memory is needed, considering the amount of time and type of information. A moderate level of complexity for decision making and average time pressure of decision making.

The employee must have the ability to move/lift up to 25 pounds. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and desks. Specific vision abilities required by the job includes close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
