One of the largest government agencies in the State of Texas is looking for a Linux Engineer. Though the public face of the agency is generally associated with the construction and maintenance of the state's immense state highway system, the agency is also responsible for overseeing aviation, rail, and public transportation systems in the state.

Under the infrastructure team they have a server ops team, network ops, data center (DCS) and performance management team that reports to this manager. Traditionally, for server and network ops team has been strictly operations (tickets in, tickets out) and they are building a brand-new team solely around the infrastructure and making sure infrastructure from server and network side is at N-1 level with code versions and hardware versions, focused on planning and developing road maps, and testing and planning for new projects and technology that is coming. They also added security changes to test before going into their environment. The team is called Infrastructure Architecture. The manager is moving team members around, but a big project will play into this team. They are building a lot of this in-house but the initial project is to get to a N-1 level. For this project it’s a heavy lift, and he needs to hire a Senior Windows Admin and a Senior Linux Admin for these specific projects. There is a N-1 upgrade path, Collaboration with systems owners. Planning out testing. Specifically, these will be project resources and will sit on the IA team. This will be a 2-year engagement to perform these duties.

The Initial project and engagement will be two years and the Sys Admins will under the Infrastructure Architecture team. Most of the servers are in the DCS (Data Center Services) data centers in Austin and San Angelo. Atos runs the on-prem data center and Rackspace is responsible for the public cloud and working with the four main hyper-scalers – AWS, Azure, OCI and GCP. The TxDOT DCS environment is 65% in Atos and 35-40% is in Rackspace. There is a small footprint across the state in TxDOT data centers but that is 1-2%. 70% windows / 30% Linux. There is a lot of coordination with the DCS Program, Atos and Rackspace, as well as multiple teams within TxDOT.

They are hiring a Senior Linux Engineer to help with the project to get the environment to N-1. The engineer will be responsible for managing many flavors of Linux in the environment, Red Hat is the primary. They are also looking for someone that can bring some automation ideas as well. Ansible is what they are using automation and they want this person to help determine what they need to automate. They are currently using ansible for some simple things, but looking to grow that and wants someone to come up with those ideas. They are looking for a self-starter and someone to come in and push to get these things done. Someone who doesn’t need a whole lot of oversight and they can give a plan and they can drive it and need strong communication. They are looking for 10+ years managing the environment that they are in and someone who can communicate with a lot of teams internally. Someone also needs to be able to reach out to DCS and plan with them as well. This is a true engineer that is building and get their environment better. Working with the right team and make sure using right tool, technology and process.

Linux Engineer :

• 10 years of Linux with different flavors – Red Hat 7.x is the most prevalent, there is some 6, but they need to know multiple flavors in this environment
• Ansible – They are doing playbooks now, so being able to write that is a must
• Strong communication and drive and will to automate and determine what needs to be automated Drive and initiative to come up with ideas. What should they automate?
• Someone that doesn’t need oversight and can communicate at all levels within TxDOT – there is a lot of planning, communicating internally, reaching out to DCS partners (Atos and Rackspace)

The candidates need to be able to provide ideas and bring them to the table. They will also need to be great communicators because they will be working with all levels of IT and and other vendors like Atos and Rackspace.
