Truck Driver

Salary Range: $30,743.44 - $59,344.48

The Truck Driver position involves safely operating a variety of heavy-duty vehicles, such as dump trucks, water trucks, trash trucks, bucket trucks, and street sweepers, to transport materials and equipment while completing assigned tasks efficiently under supervision. The role includes overseeing loading and unloading, maintaining equipment condition reports, keeping basic records, and occasionally supervising helpers, along with performing manual labor as needed. Candidates must have knowledge of vehicle operation, safety regulations, and basic reporting, along with the physical ability to handle strenuous outdoor work in varying weather conditions and manage heavy materials. A valid Florida CDL (Class A or B) and demonstrated proficiency in operating specialized trucks are required.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work: The employees of this class are responsible for the safe operation of dump trucks, water trucks, trash trucks, flat beds, street sweepers, bucket trucks, drain cleaner trucks, and other equipment; and for the prompt performance of assignments according to established routines or special instructions received from a superior. Employees may also perform manual labor and may supervise employees assigned to trucks as helpers. Work is reviewed through personal inspection and observation of compliance with established work schedules.

Essential Examples of Duties: The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Truck Driver. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Director of Streets.

  • To drive trucks transporting equipment and/or material, and safe operation of street sweeper, water truck, drain cleaner truck.
  • To supervise the loading of assigned equipment and/or material and to unload assigned equipment and/or material at drop-off or disposal location.
  • To drive loaded or empty; transporting equipment to and from locations.
  • To report on condition of assigned equipment.
  • To keep records of collections made and time records of crew members.
  • To do related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the methods and techniques of automotive equipment operations.
  • Working knowledge of the laws and ordinances regulating the operation of vehicles and trucks.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and of safety precautions in operating equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make simple written reports. Skill in the operation of automotive equipment.
  • Physical strength, stamina and ability to lift, move and carry very heavy materials and containers.
  • Willingness to work under all weather conditions and to work constantly with and handle unpleasant waste material.
  • Ability and willingness to perform required manual tasks.

Physical Requirements: The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, tablets, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.
  • Work involves frequent writing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Possession of valid Florida C.D.L. "A" or "B" driver license and a good driving history is required.
  • Must show proficiency in the operation of an open body Trash Truck (20 cubic yards), Dump Truck (12 cubic yards), Water Truck (5000 gal.), street sweeper, and Drain Cleaner.
  • Must also be proficient in the operation of a front-end loader.
  • Within 30 days of being appointed, the air brakes and the "N" endorsements must be obtained.
