Job Description
Transload Operators with Cando are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services. Working in a fast-paced, customer-oriented environment, the Switching crew must work well in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Ensures safe operation of the locomotive/trackmobile and train movements; participates in job and safety briefings to receive communication regarding the daily operation
- Applies rules, special instructions, and switching procedures while operating as a transload operator or conductor including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling rail cars including air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes
- Provides protection of train, track, and equipment
- Performs equipment inspections and necessary repairs; completes daily inspection and testing of the trackmobile brakes and safety devices
- Complies with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Cando; practices and promotes safe work habits
- Keeps the interior of equipment and customer site safe, clean, and tidy
- Performs yard checks and produces yard inventory sheets
- Promptly reports all safety, equipment, and track problems to the Shift Supervisor and/or Manager; undertakes and tasks assigned by the Shift Supervisor
- Exerts "best effort" to protect human life, human safety and company property
- Actively participates with the team and provides excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
- Participates in training or company initiatives as required
Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
- Excellent teamwork skills; strong customer service skills
- Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings switching lists; read and comprehend policy and procedure manuals
- Physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches
- Ability to work flexible hours at a 24/7 operational site; work outside in all weather conditions
- Ability to obtain and maintain all required certifications and safety critical medical clearance including clear drug and alcohol testing
Education & Experience
- Experience in the rail industry or an industrial environment
- Experience operating trackmobile and locomotive would be an asset
