Welding Coupon Processing Technician

The Welding Coupon Processing Technician supports weld qualification testing by cutting welded test plates into test coupons, grinding and preparing test strips, and assisting with bend-test preparation. This is a shop-based industrial role requiring accurate measurements, safe equipment operation, and careful control of test-material identification. The technician works with welding coupons throughout the preparation process to help ensure specimens are properly prepared for inspection and testing. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and contract demand, with the potential for long-term placement or permanent hire with select clients.

Responsibilities

• Cut welded test plates into test coupons according to specified dimensions, layouts, and testing requirements.
• Safely operate horizontal and vertical band saws to process welded plates and test specimens.
• Grind welding coupons and bend-test strips to required dimensions and surface conditions using handheld and bench grinders.
• Remove weld reinforcement and backing strips while maintaining the required coupon thickness and preparing smooth, uniform test surfaces.
• Remove burrs, sharp edges, saw marks, and surface irregularities from coupon edges before testing.
• Maintain identification and traceability throughout processing, including marking specimens with welder identification, welding position, process, and coupon location.
• Separate and organize face-bend, root-bend, and side-bend specimens and maintain orderly staging for inspection, cutting, grinding, bending, and final results.
• Assist with positioning and operating bend-test equipment when trained and authorized, and report damaged equipment, incorrect dimensions, lost identification, or questionable specimens immediately.

Requirements

• Ability to safely use basic metalworking equipment and tools required for cutting, grinding, and preparing welded test specimens.
• Ability to accurately read a tape measure, ruler, and calipers and follow written dimensions and cutting layouts.
• Ability to maintain accurate identification and traceability of welding coupons throughout the preparation and testing process.
• Ability to perform repetitive cutting, grinding, measuring, and material-handling tasks accurately and consistently.
• Strong attention to detail when verifying dimensions, surface condition, specimen identification, and test-strip organization.
• Ability to work independently while following established work instructions and Quality Assurance procedures.
• Must complete required safety training, including firewatch training.
• Must be able to safely perform physical shop work involving standing, handling metal specimens, and operating industrial equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience using horizontal or vertical band saws, handheld grinders, bench grinders, or similar metalworking equipment.
• Previous experience preparing metal specimens, welding coupons, or materials for mechanical testing.
• Basic understanding of welding terminology, welding processes, welding positions, and bend-test specimen types.

Additional Information

• First-shift position with a 6:00 AM start time.
• Work is performed in a shop environment around metalworking equipment, grinders, saws, welded materials, and active testing operations.
• Exposure to industrial noise, metal debris, dust, fumes, and other shop conditions is expected; respiratory protection may be required based on task or location.
• Required PPE must be worn in accordance with site safety policies. Reliable transportation is required to report to the assigned work location.
