Job description

The Meteorologist - Predictive Services & Fire Science Modeling performs a variety of forecasting and related analytical duties that have potential impacts to APS Operations including collecting, analyzing, predicting, and disseminating specific data on weather and fire weather forecasts. Work includes the performance of a wide variety of analytical and reporting processes and methods characteristic of the science of meteorology.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in meteorology/atmospheric science, applied science or other science related field.
  • PLUS five (5) years’ experience in the field of predictive weather services.

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications

  • Experience and understanding of Fire Analytics (FA), Fire Behavior Analyst (FBAN) and Incident Meteorologist (IMET) is preferred.
  • Experience with wildfire analytics software.
  • Strong background in predictive services and solid understanding of Arizona weather patterns including winter snow, monsoon rain, and wildfire.
  • Effective communication skills demonstrated through written communications and presentations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet.

Major Accountabilities

1) Record and analyze data from worldwide weather stations, satellites, radars, and remote sensors for weather trend modeling and forecasting to support Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Operations (Fire Mitigation, ECC and DOC Operations). Utilize mathematical and computer modelling applications to help make long- and short-range weather predictions (e.g., weather outlooks, 7-day potential outlook, 30-day potential outlook, seasonal potential outlook). Ensure that weather data is collected and monitored to support validation of analyses and forecasts.

2) Provide internal and external stakeholders with weather reports and forecasts for situational awareness and fire mitigation (i.e., fire activity and fire and general weather forecasts pertinent to active incidents and critical fire weather patterns, previous observed fire behavior, and local anomalies) and T&D operational planning. Research and predict potential climate change impacts on operations.

3) May support regional operations during extreme weather and emergency events involving multiple business units (i.e., Resource Management/M&T, Generation/Distributed Energy Resources, Revenue and Load Forecasting, Call Center Operations) including providing data to aid in strategic staffing during monsoon and winter storm seasons.

4) Review, analyze, and report on relevant new and emerging scientific and technical developments that may be implemented to improve forecasting and reduce weather and fire risk to APS T&D Operations and IT systems and facilities.

5) Create and maintain a database with representative Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) regional and national data.

6) Support development and implementation of tools and methodologies to improve weather and fire prediction models on a real time basis and their impacts to the utility systems and operations including the use of cameras and remote weather stations.

7) Develop and implement weather related automated web-based systems to develop and deliver internal training to users including how weather behavior products can be integrated into daily and ongoing operations and how to effectively utilize across different functional areas (Fire Mitigation, ECC and DOC Operations).

8) Attend briefings with Incident Meteorologists (IMET) and Other Emergency Management as necessary for fire incidents impacting APS operations, system, and customers. Participate in operational briefings and other meetings to provide report outs with various Fire Mitigation and APS Operations stakeholders.
