Lead Electrical Engineer High Performance Computing - Denver, CO
This opportunity is working directly with a leading mission-critical data center developer / wholesale provider. This company provides turnkey data center solutions for High Performance Computing (HPC) / Hyperscale environment to custom-fit to the requirements of their client's ever-changing mission-critical facilities operational needs. This challenging and unique role will involve acting as a lead electrical engineer, designing critical power systems for new data centers and cross a portfolio of fast-track hyperscale data center projects. The ideal candidate will have past experience designing electrical systems for Hyperscale / Crypto / HPC data centers. They will have experience and in-depth knowledge of Electrical Power Systems / Power Distribution System design and installation, and resolve complex technical issues. Previous experience with electrical equipment design and operations to include Generators, UPS systems, PDUs and electrical switchgear is a must, with a strong understanding of how design decisions impact construction, commissioning, reliability, and long-term data center operations. You will help lead the design and effectively work with / communicate / coordinate with trades, contractors, external stakeholders and utilities, and participating directly in project, vendor, and customer discussions.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and lead projects, create designs and plans, provided and gather specifications, and execute assignments in a multidisciplinary electrical engineering design role for all sizes of data center facility design projects- Enterprise Data Centers, Colocation Providers, Crypto / HPC data center environment and for Hyperscale Companies
- Lead and coordinate electrical design efforts including development of electrical distribution systems and topologies, infrastructure and equipment layouts and selection / sizing of equipment
- Execute and lead design teams and design projects of complex scope including: Utility interconnections and substations; Medium- and low-voltage power distribution; Transformers, switchgear, and protection schemes; Backup power systems (generators / UPS); Grounding, bonding, and life safety interfaces
- Lead / Coordinate Conceptual Designs and Schematics
- Coordinate between Electrical, Mechanical, CSA, and Integration groups
- Review & Technical Oversight of Electrical drawings, specifications, and calculations; One-lines, load studies, and protection coordination
- Identify and resolve: Design gaps, Constructability issues, risks, etc
- Ensure designs reflect: Operational viability, commissioning and maintenance needs
- Interact closely with the Project Management Team, Vendors, Contractors, and Utilities to produce construction documents, develop and edit project specifications and lead the construction administration process
- Collaborate / Participate in: Design coordination meetings; contractor constructability reviews; Utility discussions, and vendor technical reviews
- Establish project objectives, policies, procedures and performance standards
- Collaborate with all design staff and oversee full cycle electrical design activities;
- Work with Management and Field teams to create RFPs; Assist in proposal development including project scope, schedule and budget
- Review and respond to RFIs and support commissioning, integration and energization efforts
- Represent the company and as a trusted technical interface with Vendors, Contractors, OEMs and Utilities
- Manage Engineering Firm supporting external design efforts, ensure external teams meet schedule and performance expectations;
- Review and approve deliverables for quality, completeness, redundancy and reliability in alignment with industry design standards within boundaries of company policies
- Effective management of project design team including resource forecasting and coordination
- Manage engineering standards portfolio wide while balancing standardization with site-specific and utility-driven requirements
- Perform post project / lessons learned and incorporate / modify future design standards and practices from construction, commissioning, and operations
- Identify potential project scope changes and aid in development of strategies to minimize impact and control deviations from estimated costs and project deadlines
- Support contact for design clients and builds effective, long-term client relationships
Qualifications:
- 10-15+ years experience in Electrical Engineering
- Experience working for MEP / A/E firms
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Licensed Professional Engineer / PE a plus
- Experience with the complex electrical systems / design process of building systems for data center, mission critical projects, high-density power environments / HPC, AI, or crypto data centers
- Knowledge of Power System Design of electrical systems found in buildings including single/three phase power distribution, protection and controls, lighting controls, grounding and life safety systems
- Knowledge of codes and specifications for the design of electrical systems including National Electric Code, Life Safety and Energy Conservation Codes ( NEC, IEEE, etc.)
- Communicate effectively directly with clients, utilities, contractors, and at times serve as primary point of client contact
- Extensive Experience with Electrical Power Systems and Equipment - UPS / Uninterruptible Power Supply, Generators, Batteries, switchgear , Power Distribution Units, Backup Power , Electrical Power, Power Systems , Medium Voltage , High Voltage ,Utility interconnections and substations, etc
- Exposure to commissioning and operational turnover
- Previous experience with design and calculation software;
- Experience with various electrical topologies and distribution systems
- Ability to lead and operate in fast-paced, lean environments / flat organization environment
- MS Office: Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint, Teams;
- Exceptional organizational skills for file management
- Self Starter, self motivated, and should prioritize well
- Effective Communicator – emails, phone and face to face
- Complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail
- Analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence
- Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines
- Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others
- Organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
