Job description

BronxWorks helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, we feed, shelter, teach, and support our neighbors to build a stronger community. In all aspects of our work, we strive for the highest ethical and performance standards and are guided by the belief that people are to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their present situation or past experiences.

Across our 60+ locations, we provide programs in a variety of service areas, including workforce development, children, youth, families, seniors and homeless prevention.

The Jerome Avenue Men’s Shelter (JAMS) provides beds to 200 men with mental illness who are experiencing homelessness. The site offers an array of social services, such as housing case management (including assistance with benefits and gathering vital documents), programming to address mental health and substance abuse issues, meals, and activities. The site has an on-site clinic that can provide primary care and psychiatric services. Residents can remain at the shelter until placed into permanent housing, ideally within nine months of receiving services

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist clients with concrete needs (e.g., hygiene products, linens, MetroCards, laundry detergent, dorm access, etc.).
  • Oversee weekly under bed cleanouts and linen exchanges.
  • Manage bed pack-ups, including completing pack-up inventory.
  • Manage use of bed bug oven.
  • Monitor client laundry room as necessary.
  • Manage client property storage and dispose of client property in accordance with policy.
  • Manage inventory of hygiene products, linens, and other client supplies.
  • Ensure that supplies remain adequately stocked in appropriate locations (e.g., office supplies, cups for water, etc.).
  • Assist in bed count and census management (for night shift).
  • Complete new client intakes, including conducting immediate needs assessment, reviewing and signing appropriate client forms, and entering data in appropriate databases.
  • Pick up and deliver packages and complete other errands as assigned.
  • Escort clients to appointments or other locations as necessary either by using agency vehicle or public transportation.
  • Provide general clerical support, including filing, faxing, typing, photocopying and sorting mail.
  • Enter client and program data into computer databases and other tracking systems.
  • Assist in the preparation of mailings.
  • Answer telephones, relay messages and greet clients and other visitors Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One to two years relevant experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in modern business communications including personal computers, electronic mail, voicemail, facsimile and copier equipment.
  • Proficiency in basic filing principles.
  • Driver’s License from the state of residence is preferred, but required for 8 am – 4 pm shift.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
  • Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
  • Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
  • Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
