The Program Advisor provides direct support to participants enrolled in workforce training, language instruction, and educational development courses. This position is responsible for intake interviews, academic and career advising, case management, and the coordination of support services to help students achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals.
This is a temporary grant funded position through June 30 year 2026 contingent upon grantor funding and grant extensions.
This grant position will be eligible for participation in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) after 6 consecutive months of continuous employment.
• Performs intake, eligibility screening, registration, and orientation of new students in accordance with federal and state guidelines
• Conducts one-on-one advising sessions to assess student needs, set goals, and create individualized academic and career pathways
• Monitors student progress and engagement; provide timely interventions, referrals, or support services as needed
• Coordinates and facilitates workshops related to college readiness, employability skills, and career exploration
• Establishes and maintains accurate and confidential student records, case notes, and documentation in accordance with program and institutional policies
• Provides referrals to appropriate college and community resources, including tutoring, financial assistance, childcare, and employment services
• Collaborates with faculty and staff to support student persistence and program completion
• Assists in the development of orientation materials, outreach strategies, and participant communications
• Participates in team meetings, professional development activities, and program evaluation initiatives
• Supports program compliance through timely data entry, reporting, and adherence to grant requirements
• Works closely with provider agencies in order to meet contract needs
• Assists students with applications for Translation/Evaluation, Metro Pass Services, Childcare, etc
• Functions as social worker for clients at local, State and Federal level
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Bachelor’s degree in appropriate field and three (3) years of related experience
• Multilingual language skills in English with either Spanish and/or Creole as a second/third language
• Knowledge and understanding of MDC organization, goals, objectives, policies and procedures
• Knowledge of academic advising and career development principles and practices
• Knowledge of advising, career development principles/practices
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications and other computer applications related to the department
• Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group activities
• Working knowledge of resources at local, State and Federal level
• Ability to monitor student attendance and complete case management duties
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
• Knowledge of Referral system to send students to external agencies for additional resource support
• Ability to use scrutiny, creativity and specialized analysis linked to each specific case, combined with Contract specifics
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and some weekends
• Ability to work well with students, faculty and staff
