Position :: Senior Software Engineer - Data Engineering & IAM

Position Overview

USAA is seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer with strong expertise in Java development, data engineering, microservices architecture, and enterprise data integration. This role will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting scalable applications and data processing solutions that enable identity risk assessment, account discovery, and data-driven security analysis across the enterprise.

The ideal candidate combines deep software engineering capabilities with hands-on experience building data pipelines, REST APIs, and cloud-native applications. This position requires the ability to work across the full software development lifecycle while partnering closely with architects, engineers, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performance solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Software Engineering & Application Development

• Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade Java applications using Spring Boot and microservices architecture.
• Build scalable RESTful APIs utilizing security best practices and industry standards.
• Develop highly available and resilient applications that support growing business and data processing needs.
• Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, testing, and production deployments.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to deliver scalable and maintainable solutions.

Data Engineering & Integration

• Design and develop ETL/ELT data pipelines that integrate data from multiple enterprise systems into Oracle databases.
• Build and maintain data processing frameworks used for risk analysis and account discovery.
• Ensure data quality, integrity, reliability, and performance throughout the data lifecycle.
• Support data transformation, correlation, and aggregation processes across multiple sources.
• Develop solutions that scale to increasing data volumes and evolving business requirements.

Identity & Access Management (IAM)

• Support initiatives focused on enterprise account discovery and risk assessment.
• Develop solutions that analyze user and account attributes across multiple systems.
• Enable risk-based decision-making through automated data processing and correlation models.
• Collaborate with information security teams to support IAM-related objectives.
• Contribute to the design and implementation of secure access and identity management solutions.

Production Support & Operational Excellence

• Support application deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production operations.
• Identify root causes of performance issues and implement effective solutions.
• Optimize Java applications, APIs, and database interactions for performance and scalability.
• Implement automation and operational best practices to improve reliability and efficiency.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog grooming, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in Software Engineering and Data Engineering.
• 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience.
• 5+ years of experience developing Spring Boot applications.
• Experience building and deploying applications using microservices architecture.
• Experience with containerization technologies including:
  • Docker
  • Kubernetes
  • OpenShift
• Experience developing and supporting CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.
• Experience with Oracle databases and enterprise data integration solutions.
• Experience building ETL/ELT data pipelines.
• Strong troubleshooting, performance tuning, and optimization skills.
• Experience working in Agile development environments.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
