Job Title: Polysomnographic Technologist Profession: Clinical-Allied Specialty: Sleep Technology Duration: 13 months Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 10 Experience: Minimum one (1) year of relevant sleep lab experience License: BLS (American Heart Association) Certifications: Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or Registered Sleep Technologist Must-Have: Credentialed in sleep technology (RPSGT or RST) Description: A sleep technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in-center and home sleep apnea testing. They perform diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and provide comprehensive patient care. The technologist also offers sleep-related education and support to patients and families. They are responsible for documenting patient arrival, interactions, and consent for testing. The technologist reviews and verifies orders for testing and conducts insurance and prior authorization verification. They evaluate patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity. Acquiring and documenting additional information from the patient or ordering provider as needed is essential. They perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting, desensitization, and education. The technologist prepares patients for testing according to policy, selecting appropriate equipment per order. They document routine observations during testing and correlate physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation of data. Performing equipment and physiologic calibrations to ensure quality data is part of their responsibilities. Monitoring data quality to ensure recording is artifact-free is crucial. The technologist also cleans and disinfects equipment, assuring infection and quality control according to policy. They demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to provide age-specific care for all populations seen in the Sleep Lab. Implementing appropriate interventions including patient safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions is required. Following procedures to verify the integrity of data and completeness of test documentation and patient forms is mandatory. Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with all internal and external customers is essential. The technologist assists in requesting and maintaining testing supplies while participating in routine department tasks. They demonstrate proficiency in distinguishing sleep states and identifying clinical events according to professional guidelines. Scoring sleep/wake stages and clinical events such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, and arousals is a key duty. Generating accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data is required. Supporting and participating in quality and performance improvement initiatives is part of their role. The technologist performs and demonstrates proficiency in ancillary testing, including oximetry, actigraphy, and home sleep apnea testing. Following procedural protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency Testing and Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing is essential. They document routine observations during testing and correlate physiologic data accordingly. Reviewing patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity is required. Acquiring and documenting additional information from the patient or ordering provider, when necessary, ensures the appropriateness of testing and parameters.
