Mesquite ISD - Compensation Plans Auxiliary Compensation Plan

Pay Grade: 10 $32.69 - $45.15 Shift Type: Full-Time Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt Reports To: Director - Transportation EMPLOYMENT BEGINS: As soon as possible

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To ensure the safe and economical usage of fleet vehicles; maintenance, repair, and oversight of repair facilities conducting fleet maintenance operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education/Certification: High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with air brakes and passenger endorsement
  • Texas Education Agency School Bus Driver Certificate
  • Special Knowledge/Skills: Must pass the D.O.T. Medical Examination Report for School Bus Drivers. Must be able to pass alcohol and drug test. Possess ability to read, write, understand and communicate verbal and written instructions and responses in English. Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engineer maintenance and repair. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently. Demonstrate success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring an understanding of and proficiency at automotive and truck mechanical repair. Possess a full range of motion in hands, arms, and trunk. Possess effective leadership and communication skills. Ability to operate bus.
  • Experience: Five years' experience as a mechanic

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Ensures that the school bus fleet is safe to operate.
  • Develop and maintain safe shop practices.
  • Ensures district buses meet all DOT and state annual inspections and preventative maintenance requirements.
  • Ensures shop personnel receive required training to maintain the bus fleet is safe for student transportation.
  • Manage parts inventory of all parts on hand.
  • Maintains all bus vehicle records.
  • Assist with information concerning the purchase of new fleet vehicles.
  • Establish an efficient and effective system of routine equipment and automotive maintenance and / or preventative care.
  • Use of diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in automotive engines.
  • Rebuild, replace, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories.
  • Establish and promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping standards in all work-connected areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Monitor work of mechanics.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Mental Demands: Reading and comprehending simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Reading, writing, understanding and communicating verbal and written instructions and responses in English.
  • Physical demands/environmental factors: Pushing, pulling, lifting, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching, and reaching with lifting. Carrying up to 50 pounds without assistance. Operating motor vehicle. Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold) Exposure to vehicle fumes.
