About Nomad Digital

Nomad Digital is the world's leading provider of passenger and fleet connectivity solutions to the railway industry. Founded in 2002, and headquartered in the UK, currently serving more than 80+ global customers - in more than 40 countries - Nomad designs, builds, deploys and manages passenger Wi-Fi and on-board passenger infotainment systems. Nomad also provides remote online condition-based monitoring and maintenance solutions for optimising fleet management, operational performance and improving fuel economy.

When you join Nomad Digital, you will join a forward-thinking, fast-growing, fun environment with access to some of the very latest technology in its field. You will work with experts who innovate collaboratively, creating an environment of teamwork and trustworthiness.

Overview

Nomad Digital has an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our Engineering team based in Hayward, California. Working closely with the Project Manager and Engineering Manager, you will coordinate the technical delivery of projects, from solution design and documentation to testing, deployment, and troubleshooting. The role requires strong knowledge of IP networking, wireless technologies, and Linux platforms, along with at least three years of hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting network devices such as switches, routers, and access points.

The successful candidate must be able to commute to the Hayward office and customer depots in the Greater Bay Area, with occasional international travel required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Define project deliverables based on requirements from the sales-to-delivery handover.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to coordinate internal teams and ensure deliverables are completed within the specified timescales.
  • Engage with clients to determine requirements, agree solutions, review documentation, agree test plans, and present results.
  • Design solutions during the presales stage and finalise designs during the project phase.
  • Create project documentation in line with requirements and planning, including:
    • Design documentation, including synoptics
    • Bills of Materials (BoMs)
    • Integration documentation for third-party solutions
    • Test specifications
    • Configuration, training, and installation manuals
    • Documentation for handover to operations
  • Define and review configurations to ensure they meet design objectives.
  • Support factory acceptance testing (FAT) and on-site acceptance testing (SAT) to ensure successful service delivery.
  • Troubleshoot issues through direct investigation or by coordinating with internal teams or manufacturers; may act as 3rd line support for internal teams.
  • Manage the handover to clients or in-house support staff, including training.

Qualification Requirements:

Essential

  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking, LAN and VLAN IP planning.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux.
  • Hands-on experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network devices including switches, routers, access points, and associated cabling.
  • Troubleshooting and problem management experience in a networking environment.
  • Good understanding of RF environments.
  • Strong documentation skills using Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Thorough and logical approach to planning and implementation.
  • Very good communication skills, both technical and user-facing.

Desirable

  • CCNA certification.
  • Knowledge of mobile data networks.
  • Knowledge of railway certification requirements.
  • Linux Red Hat or Debian certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, IT, or Computing Engineering, or a related subject.
  • Understanding of IT/Telecom Operations and Maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of antenna design and antenna placement.

Other Essential Requirements

  • Fluency in both French and English.
  • Familiarity with industrial and maintenance processes in a railway environment is strongly preferred but not essential.
  • Ability to travel within North America (5–15% depending on project phase).
  • Ability to work onsite in train depots or shunting yards.

Key Behavioural Competencies

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work well in pressurised situations
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work to set deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to think proactively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to multitask effectively while ensuring timescales are met
  • Positive “can-do” attitude
