Job description

Complex Construction Claims Team Member

Liberty Mutual has an immediate opening for an experienced claims professional to join our Complex Construction Claims Team within the Specialized Claims group. This role handles high-exposure, complex and litigated Commercial Casualty claims $500,000 and up) involving construction-related Bodily Injury and specific-event Property Damage claims under Commercial General Liability (CGL) and Commercial Auto policies for our Construction Industry Accounts.

The role does not handle Construction Defect claims.

In this position, you will own claim strategy end-to-end - establishing coverage and liability positions, setting and adjusting reserves, directing investigation and expert resources, managing litigation and outside counsel, and driving timely resolution. You will be expected to operate with strong technical judgment, influence, and collaboration across Legal, Underwriting, and other internal partners, and may serve as a technical resource on complex matters.

You will be required to go to the office twice a month. If you live within 50-mile radius of one of the listed hub offices (Boston, MA; Westborough, MA; Plano, TX; Suwanee, GA; Indianapolis, IN; Hoffman Estates, IL; Lake Oswego, OR; Las Vegas, NV, Chandler, AZ or Weatogue, CT). This policy is subject to change. We will consider a full-time remote candidate if you do not live within 50-miles of one of these offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Own complex losses ($500K+) from assignment through resolution, including coverage analysis, liability assessment, investigation planning, reserving, negotiation, and settlement authority (including claim denials where appropriate).
  • Handle complex/litigated matters involving CGL and Commercial Auto exposures, including multi-party BI, catastrophic injury, risk transfer/contractual issues, and cross-coverage scenarios.
  • Interpret and apply coverage including (as applicable) additional insured, tender/targeted tenders, indemnity agreements, other insurance, SIR/deductibles, primary vs. excess, and limits erosion considerations.
  • Develop and execute litigation strategy: analyze pleadings, manage discovery strategy, evaluate venue/risk, prepare for mediations/settlement conferences, and recommend resolution strategy.
  • Build and lead the working team (e.g., Home Office Legal, defense counsel, SIU as needed, medical/causation experts, accident reconstruction, engineers).
  • Select, manage, and coordinate outside counsel including budgets, staffing plans, billing guidelines compliance, and performance.
  • Establish and maintain accurate file documentation and ensure security of financial transactions and claim information.
  • Collaborate with internal partners (Underwriting, Risk Control, Reinsurance/Excess, Product, Subrogation, etc.) and provide technical insight on trends.
  • Mentor/coach less experienced staff as appropriate and contribute to projects, training, or process improvements.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) and 5 to 7 years claims adjusting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience handling high-severity and/or complex litigated claims, including coverage evaluation, reserving discipline, expert management, and negotiation/mediation.
  • Commercial General Liability (CGL) claim experience.
  • Commercial Auto Complex Bodily Injury claim experience.
  • Strong litigation management skills (pleadings review, discovery strategy, counsel direction, negotiation) and ability to drive outcomes in adversarial environments.
  • Strong written/oral communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to influence across stakeholders with a focus on customer service.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) and 510+ years of progressively complex commercial casualty claim handling experience.
  • Experience with construction risk transfer and complex coverage issues (AI/tender/contractual indemnity/other insurance/limits).
  • Experience handling losses with multiple insureds, Wrap Up Insurance programs (OCIP & CCIP), and excess involvement.
  • Law degree, Professional designations (AIC, CPCU, SCLA) or equivalent advanced training.
