SUMMARY/SCOPE:

Program Director over Surgical Technology is a full-time, 12-month administrative faculty appointment with teaching responsibilities. This position is responsible for program administration, organization, supervision, continuous quality improvement, and academic oversight, including curriculum planning and development, to ensure compliance with CAAHEP/ARC-STSA standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These examples do not include all possible tasks & do not limit the assignment of related tasks.

Bear overall responsibility for the Surgical Technology education programs, including budgeting, faculty and staff supervision and development, assessment, ongoing curriculum development and revision, student recruitment, and meeting the accreditation requirements of CAAHEP/ARC-STSA and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC).

Lead continuous quality review and improvement activities, including outcomes assessment.

Provide academic oversite, including curriculum planning, development, and revision.

Coordinate and document advisory committee meetings, faculty meetings, and recommendations.

Ensure adequate program resources (faculty, clinical sites, equipment, instructional materials).

Support student recruitment, progression, remediation, and retention processes as needed.

Recruit, hire, mentor, manage, and evaluate faculty members and clinical coordinator (full-time and/or adjunct) to meet accreditation requirements for teaching within this institution.

Working with the Director of Clinical Education to obtain clinical practice settings and/or assisting with student supervision in the clinic.

Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with institutional policies and procedures.

Providing evidence of faculty expertise and knowledge to teach curriculum content.

Verifying students' completion of program requirements.

Maintain communication with the Dean and other University Administrative officials.

Completion of all university required documents including the 5-year Annual Report and the Annual Assessment of Learning Outcomes (ALOC) reports.

Guide and mentor students.

Guide long and short-term strategic planning by providing a vision for the departments.

Guide development and maintenance of departmental policies and procedures.

Provide leadership to the department in scholarly efforts.

Promote and support faculty professional development.

Promote departmental involvement and communication within the college, university and community.

Support collaborative and interdisciplinary experiences for faculty and students.

Provide service to the University and community including active participation on various University and College Committees.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct supervision of all faculty and staff within the Surgical Technology program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, and willingness to learn to use university software and online educational platforms.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

The Program Director must meet the requirements of CAAHEP/ARC-STSA accreditation

Must hold an unencumbered current license or privilege to practice as a Certified Surgical Technologist in the state of Texas.

Minimum of 5 years of experience either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past 10 years.

Must be a graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic agency.

An associate degree is required.

A bachelor’s degree is highly recommended.

Must possess a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

Teaching experience in a surgical technology education program is highly recommended and preferred.

Must have demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in administration.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must hold a current and unencumbered license or eligibility for licensure to practice as a licensed Surgical Technologist in the State of Texas.
