Principal Software Engineer, Developer Platform & Release Engineering

About the Role

We're building the next generation of enterprise data and engineering platforms that power secure, scalable, and compliant software delivery across one of the world's largest financial institutions. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the design and development of enterprise-grade developer platform capabilities, CI/CD automation, DevSecOps frameworks, and cloud-native deployment solutions that enable thousands of engineers to deliver software faster and more reliably.

You will partner closely with the Chief Data Office (CDO), Chief Development Experience Office (CDXO), Platform Engineering, Security, and Enterprise Architecture teams to transform the software delivery lifecycle through our Path to Production Release Cargo Management (P2P-RCM) initiative.

This role combines deep technical expertise, platform engineering leadership, and hands-on software development. You will create reusable engineering solutions, establish best practices, and drive adoption of standardized release and deployment patterns across the enterprise.

What You'll Do

Lead Developer Platform Engineering

• Design and build reusable engineering frameworks, reference implementations, and platform capabilities that enable scalable software delivery.
• Develop opinionated "golden path" solutions including starter repositories, CI/CD templates, deployment blueprints, and automation libraries.
• Translate architecture standards into production-ready engineering assets that accelerate developer productivity and platform adoption.
• Drive engineering excellence through technical leadership, design reviews, mentoring, and architectural guidance.

Build Enterprise CI/CD Solutions

• Design and develop reusable GitHub Actions workflows and CI/CD automation frameworks.
• Create scalable release management solutions supporting both enterprise pipeline users and application teams with custom delivery models.
• Implement automated testing, build validation, software quality controls, and release readiness assessments.
• Improve deployment reliability, delivery velocity, and operational efficiency through automation.

Advance DevSecOps and Security Automation

• Integrate security controls directly into CI/CD workflows using tools such as SonarQube, Checkmarx, Black Duck, GitHub Advanced Security, and DAST solutions.
• Develop policy-driven automation that provides continuous compliance, audit readiness, and automated evidence collection.
• Implement software supply chain security controls including dependency management, artifact validation, provenance tracking, and container security.
• Build automated vulnerability remediation and security reporting workflows.

Enable Cloud-Native Software Delivery

• Build and maintain standardized deployment frameworks using Harness CD and OpenShift/Kubernetes.
• Develop deployment patterns supporting progressive delivery, environment promotion, automated rollback, and release governance.
• Define observability, deployment traceability, and operational readiness standards.
• Partner with Platform Engineering and Cloud Operations teams to improve platform reliability and resiliency.

Drive Technical Strategy

• Identify opportunities to improve engineering workflows, release governance, and developer experience.
• Champion modern software engineering practices including DevOps, GitOps, Infrastructure as Code, and Site Reliability Engineering.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and establish recommendations for enterprise adoption.
• Represent the organization in cross-functional architecture and engineering forums.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience developing large-scale applications and platforms.
• 10+ years of experience building web applications and APIs using Python and modern frameworks such as Django, FastAPI, or Flask.
• 8+ years of experience designing and implementing CI/CD platforms, automation frameworks, and DevOps solutions.
• Experience developing reusable GitHub Actions workflows and enterprise release automation.
• Experience integrating application security and compliance controls into software delivery pipelines.
• 5+ years of experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration technologies, including OpenShift.
• Experience building deployment automation using Harness CD or comparable deployment platforms.
• Experience leading complex technical initiatives across multiple teams and organizations.
• Experience working with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot.

Preferred Qualifications

• 12+ years of experience developing enterprise software platforms using Python.
• Expertise in Python packaging, test automation, and modern development practices.
• Experience operating large-scale Django-based platforms.
• Familiarity with Wagtail CMS and CodeRed CMS.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible) and GitOps platforms such as ArgoCD.
• Knowledge of enterprise repository governance, branching strategies, and release management models.
• Experience with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), observability platforms, and incident management.
• Experience with API-first and specification-driven development practices.
• Demonstrated contributions to open-source projects, including Conda-Forge, Pixi Package Manager, GitHub Actions, or related ecosystem technologies.
• Experience establishing engineering metrics and operational excellence frameworks, including DORA metrics.
