Job description

Job Title

This Position is Grant Funded and program continuation is dependent upon successful funding.

Under direct supervision, schedules, coordinates, and provides daily pick-ups and shuttle service for older adult residents of the City; and performs related work as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Schedules, develops, and implements shuttle service for older adults.
  • Assists Senior Center receptionist in listing pick-up sites and clients.
  • Performs pre-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Cleans, maintains, checks, and inspects City vehicles; delivers vehicles for upkeep and repair as needed.
  • Provides safe and sensitive handling of older clients.
  • Reports all incidents as they relate to passengers.
  • Adheres to scheduled pick-up times.
  • Maintains weekly communication regarding needs, suggestions, and concerns with supervisor.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • City of Westminster geography.
  • Safety regulations of large van ridership.
  • Basic driving skills and vehicle maintenance.
  • Safe work practices.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public and City staff.

Ability to:

  • Drive a commercial passenger vehicle and/or bus.
  • Perform vehicle inspections.
  • Organize and schedule routes and pick-up times.
  • Work cooperatively with Senior Center staff and elderly clients.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in English.
  • Provide program information, schedules, and fees.
  • Provide safety briefings for passengers and maintain a safe environment while driving.
  • Read maps and use on-line direction programs.
  • Safely operate a wheelchair lift.
  • Establish, foster, and maintain positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and two (2) years of experience driving large vans. Must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screen, and background investigation (including fingerprinting).

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Class B California Driver License with passenger endorsement.
  • Youth Bus Driver certificate (12523VC).

Additional Requirements

  1. Must provide DMV printout of driving record (H-6 only) no more than 30 days old. Applicants will not be considered if printout shows more than (1) point for either a moving violation(s) or an accident(s).
  2. Must agree to a criminal background check (fingerprinting required) through the California Department of Justice within (30) days of hire date.
  3. Must successfully complete a DMV physical.
  4. A complete physical examination which includes a drug screen (paid for by the City).
  5. Class B California Driver License with passenger endorsement required prior to employment.

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands Must possess mobility to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate a motor vehicle. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Environmental Elements Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, and road hazards. Employees may interact with upset passengers or general public.

RETIREMENT: Part-Time Employees participate in the Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) in lieu of Social Security. Employees contribute 6.0% of their salary toward the plan and the City contributes 1.5% of salary as well. SICK LEAVE: Part-Time Employees are entitled to Paid Sick Leave in accordance with the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement "Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act of 2014 Paid Sick Leave".
