Elementary Special Education Teacher
An elementary special education teacher assesses students with disabilities, develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), adapts curriculum, teaches academic/social/life skills in small groups and one-on-one, collaborates with staff/parents, tracks progress, and helps with transitions to prepare students for future grades and life. Key duties include setting behavior rules, using various teaching methods (like multisensory instruction), and ensuring accessibility for students with diverse needs (physical, emotional, cognitive).
Core Responsibilities
- Assessment & Planning: Assess student needs, develop IEPs with goals, and adapt general lessons.
- Instruction: Teach core subjects, social skills, and life skills using individualized methods (small groups, one-on-one).
- Collaboration: Work with general education teachers, parents, counselors, and administrators on IEPs and student progress.
- Progress Monitoring: Track student performance, maintain records, and update IEPs.
- Behavior Management: Establish rules, implement behavior plans, and use positive reinforcement.
- Transition Planning: Prepare students for grade-to-grade and post-school transitions.
Key Skills & Knowledge
- Deep understanding of special education principles and effective teaching methods for disabilities.
- Ability to modify curriculum and use assistive technology.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
Typical Work Environment
- Works with elementary students (K-6) with various disabilities (learning, emotional, physical, intellectual).
