HOURLY RATE: $33.18

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
(This list is not intended to detail all aspects of the assigned work but is representative of the job’s overall responsibilities.)
  • Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures.
  • Removes miscellaneous duct work, sheeting, locker, furniture, etc., from various locations of vessels or shipyard sites and rebuilds and/or reinstalls by welding and fitting techniques.
  • Fabricates basic sheet metal projects to industrial customer specifications.
  • Visualizes a completed job from start to finish.
  • Uses blueprints in accomplishing work projects.
  • Performs basic layout (i.e., on center square to round, round elbow, funnel, etc.)
  • Fabricates duct work on and off the ship.
  • Removes and installs duct work.
  • Performs basic welding – stick and mig.
  • Recognizes materials (e.g., stainless steel, aluminum, etc.) and determines gauge.
  • Successfully completes sustained work at various heights, including, but not limited to 100 feet.
  • Uses a tape measure.
  • Works within a confined space, climbs ladders, and performs work in overhead positions.
  • Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property.
  • Performs assembly work associated with the sheet metal trade.
  • Installs duct work, galley equipment, ceiling panels, etc.
  • Incumbent performs similar work in all areas of the Yard as the need arises.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Communicate effectively, work independently or in a group.
  • Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Ability to use basic geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to do use shop equipment – press, shear, hand break, roll, Pittsburgh, drill press, spot welder, etc.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • 2 years relevant work experience, preferably in the shipyard.
  • Proven skills, work history and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:
  • Four-hour fire watch certification
  • HAZWOPER – First Responder Awareness Level
  • Confined space certification


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Sitting: Occasionally-sits for 1 hour at a time, up to 8 hours per day, while welding. Sits on all types of surfaces. May adjust position.
  • Standing: Frequently-stands while performing work at various tooling machines. May stand up to 2 hours uninterrupted, up to 8 hours per day. Stands on level or graded surfaces of concrete or steel.
  • Walking: Frequently-walks a maximum of 3,000 feet uninterrupted, 2 times per day. Walks short distances between jobs on ship, while transporting materials to and from various job sites. Walks on level and graded surfaces and must walk around obstacles. Walks on concrete or steel surface.
  • Crouching: Occasionally crouches up to 15 minutes at a time, up to 10 times per day, while measuring, fabricating and installing metal projects in the shop and on-board ship.
  • Kneeling/Crawling: Occasionally crawls up to 10 feet, up to 10 times per day, in order to access specific job sites. May kneel on 1 or both knees, depending upon location of work site. Kneels up to 15 minutes at a time, up to 8 hours per day total.
  • Stooping: Occasionally stoops while measuring, fabricating and installing sheet metal projects in shop and aboard ship. May stoop for up to 15 minutes at a time, up to 2-1/2 hours per day. May stoop while operating various types of equipment.
  • Twisting Knees: Occasionally twists at knees to access areas throughout the day. Waist-Twists dozens of times per day at waist while moving sheet metal work in process between machines. Neck-Occasionally twists neck in all positions while observing machining work and conducting measurements. Could hold position for 30 minutes at a time.
  • Climbing: Occasionally climbs 30-foot ladders to 100 feet in height total. Climbs stairs when going aboard ship and accessing various areas of the ship.
  • Balancing: Occasionally needs balance while climbing stairs/ladders aboard ship and while performing installation projects while working from a ladder, or on platforms.
  • Leg/Foot Use (To repetitively operate machine controls): Occasionally while operating welding equipment.
  • Reaching: Overhead continually. Performs installation work overhead while standing on ladder or while on level concrete surface. Has arms overhead for as much as 6 hours per day.
  • Extension: Continually extends arms while operating equipment, manipulating material, performing installation projects, up to 6 hours/day.
  • Handling/Grasping: Continuously holding and operating tools and equipment while moving metal sheets through machines for fabrication, and while performing installation. Removes and tightens bolts 50 to 100 times/day.
  • Fingering/Feeling: Not required.
  • Pushing/Pulling: (Average) Occasionally pushes individual metal sheets through equipment. Sheets may require up to 25 pounds of force. (Maximum)-May push with up to 50 pounds force while conducting various stages of fabrication process.
  • 15. Lifting/Carrying: (Average) Carries up to 25 pounds occasionally when moving toolboxes, lifting individual sheets of metal, and carrying finished product. (Maximum)-May lift up to 100 pounds of duct work from ground level to any height. May need to carry this much weight a distance of 40 feet, 5 to 10 times/day. May request assistance. Maximum weight expected to lift individually - 75 pounds.
  • Other physical demands: Occasionally uses scissors for cutting and trimming sheet metal, up to 2 hours/day.


ESSENTIAL USE OF SENSES
  • Talking: Occasionally talks in person or on telephone/radio with other workers to coordinate work effort and ensure safety.
  • Hearing: Occasionally talks with other co-workers in person or on the telephone/radio to coordinate work effort and ensure safety.
  • Vision: Continually needed while performing work.
    • Near Acuity (clarity of vision at 20 inches or less): Performs precise work requiring near acuity for measurement.
    • Far Acuity (clarity of vision at 20 feet of more): Must be able to observe surrounding areas for safety reasons.
    • Depth Perception (three-dimensional vision to judge distance/ spatial relationships): Must be able to judge distances/spatial relationships because of heavy equipment and to move safely about on-board ship.
    • Color Vision (if required to distinguish colors for job performance or safety): Not required.
    • Field of Vision (if required to observe a large field of vision while keeping eye fixed on a given point for job performance or safety): Must have adequate field of vision to safely observe surrounding area.
  • Smell: Not required.
  • Other sensory requirements: Not required.


INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
  • Interaction/communication with others: Occasionally interacts with others to coordinate a safe working environment while projects are ongoing.
  • Works alone/independently: May work independently or with a crew to dismantle or reassemble a specific item. Works alone in shop, with a partner on ship.
  • Directs/supervises others: Not required.
  • Repetitive work: Work changes on a day-to-day basis.
  • Attention to detail: Must perform accurate cutting and assembly in order to ensure a satisfactory final product.
  • Flexibility: Priorities may change during the course of the day, depending upon problems that develop.
  • Other mental/psychological demands: None.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Works indoors: Frequently works indoors in either a ship or workshop setting, and is exposed to noise, heat, cold, and dust.
  • Works outdoors: Frequently exposed to outdoor weather while moving between shipyard and shop and while performing work on outdoor areas.
  • Safety equipment required: Hard hat, welding helmet, safety glasses, hearing protection.
  • Other Exposures: Noise, dust, fumes. Heavy lifting is occasionally part of the job.
  • Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: Uses shear, hand brake, pan brake, welding equipment, turning/burring machines, punches, grinder, drills, unishears, forming rolls, hand/power tools, sawsalls, come-a-longs, torches, heliark.
  • Required hygiene standards: Per company standards.
