Job description

Environmental Assessment Services, LLC (EAS) is an established environmental services firm. Founded in 2005, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Natives of Kodiak since 2015, EAS specializes in environmental site characterization and assessment, compliance and permitting, natural and cultural resource management, and planning, among other disciplines.

EAS is currently seeking a Restoration Ecologist . This is a full-time position located in the Riverside/Anaheim, California area.

The Restoration Ecologist will provide technical leadership on ecological restoration projects while assisting the Project Manager with project management functions from planning through implementation and project close-out. The ideal candidate is a restoration professional who can lead and supervise ecological field work, mentor staff, and assist with managing complex projects involving multiple stakeholders, consultants, and regulatory agencies.

Essential Functions:

Technical & Ecological Leadership

  • Oversee maintenance of restoration sites including managing weedy and invasive species, implement remedial planting and seeding, apply irrigation water as needed, and maintain irrigation systems.

  • Hire and supervise field crews for restoration site maintenance.

  • Prepare monthly restoration reports and technically review quarterly and annual restoration monitoring reports prepared by subcontractors.

  • Ensure that projects meet ecological performance standards and permit requirements.

  • For new projects, lead the design and implementation of ecological restoration projects (e.g. wetland, riparian, coastal, upland and habitat restoration).

  • Develop restoration plans, planting and monitoring plans and adaptive management strategies.

  • Conduct site assessments, vegetation surveys, and conduct baseline monitoring.

  • Analyze monitoring data and develop technical memoranda and reports.

Project Management Assistance

  • Assist the Project Manager with planning, scheduling, budgeting and resource allocation with the goal of eventual transition to the Project Manager role for a qualified candidate.

  • Track and document project progress, deliverables and timelines to ensure on-time and on-budget completion.

  • Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers and field crews.

  • Develop cost estimates, bids and change orders.

  • Serve as the project lead in client meetings and support communication with regulatory agencies and stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, landscape architects and construction managers.

  • Promote safety, quality control and best practices.

  • Support proposal development, scope writing and technical reports.

  • Contribute to client relationship building and project pursuits.

  • Review project deliverables for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, adherence to local and regional planning objectives, and meet project contractual requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Restoration Ecology, Ecology, Botany, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's degree preferred).

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an ecologist/botanist, and field experience with restoration projects. Wetland delineation experience is a plus but not a requirement.

  • Knowledge of California coastal plant communities.

  • Experience conducting biological field studies and preparing technical documents.

  • Proficient in the use of ArcGIS and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams.

  • Strong writing and reporting skills.

  • Experience assisting with project management tasks such as budgeting, scheduling and subcontractor coordination.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to work in outdoor conditions

This specific position requires regular outdoor field work in varying environmental conditions, including high temperatures, direct sunlight, humidity, wind, dust, and uneven terrain. Candidates must be comfortable working in hot weather for extended periods. The employee is frequently required, sometimes for extended periods, to walk, stand, or sit. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. The employee is occasionally required to climb ladders or stairs; use hands to type, finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and get in and out of vehicles. The employee might occasionally lift and/or move small or large objects up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicle, prepare and analyze data, and work on computers.
