The Position

The After School Program Specialist plays a key role in creating safe, engaging, and inspiring learning environments for students beyond the school day. In this dynamic role, you'll plan and organize a variety of expanded learning opportunities - including academic intervention, homework support, enrichment activities, and supervised recreation - all designed to help students grow, discover new interests, and succeed.

This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefited position. Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per year.

Essential and Marginal Function Statements
Essential and other important responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Maintain clear, effective and timely communication and collaborative working relationship with supervisory staff.

Supervise program participants.

Supervise and maintain an appropriate student to staff ratio.

Promote and ensure a safe and positive environment for all program participants.

Provide academic assistance to program participants.

Plan and implement site curriculum and recreational and enrichment activities.

Utilize positive guidance techniques and appropriate behavior support for program participants; adhere and enforce all rules consistently and equitably.

Monitor and report any observations or concerns regarding the needs and problems of participants to supervisory staff.

Assist in daily set-up and cleanup; maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for participants.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City and School District employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.

Attend meetings and training sessions as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:

Practices and techniques for favorable public relations.

Practices and techniques to achieve positive group cooperation in expanded learning programs.

Practices to support participants' social-emotional development.

Instructional strategies and techniques for effective, age-appropriate academic and enrichment programming.

Light custodial maintenance techniques.

Perform basic arithmetic.

Think clearly, quickly and accurately in emergencies.

Develop favorable public relations and maintain an appearance that projects a professional and positive image.

Maintain an environment that is physically and emotionally safe.

Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Work various locations as assigned.

Work various shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned.

Prepare reports and records as required.

Lift and carry heavy objects.

Run forward, backward and laterally.

Perform light custodial maintenance tasks.

Travel from worksite to worksite as needed.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Some volunteer or paid work experience with children is desirable.

Knowledge of subject areas taught in specific assignment, such as those in Transitional Kindergarten through Middle School, age-appropriate activities, or ability to learn subjects and activities quickly is desirable.

Training:

High School diploma or GED equivalency, supported by forty-eight (48) units of higher education or successfully pass a local assessment of knowledge or skills that demonstrates the equivalent of the above requirements.

Required to attend, participate and complete all trainings as assigned. Including, but not limited to, Mandated Reporter training.

License or Certificate:

Possession of the below certificates are required to be obtained within 30 days of appointment to be scheduled and must be maintained for continued employment.
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate
    • Certifications must have an in-person, instructor-led skills session with hands and breaths training.
Additional Requirements:

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age at time of application.

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Tuberculosis clearance by time of appointment.

If hired, you will be required to be fingerprinted at the time of appointment, in compliance with Section 10911-5 of the Education Code and Section 5164 of the Public Resources Code. In addition, it is the City's policy to not hire individuals convicted of any crime involving moral turpitude, including, but not limited to:
  • An offense involving conduct requiring registration pursuant to Penal Code Section 290 (sex offender); an offense involving sexual misconduct with children; an offense involving prostitution (including solicitation).
  • An offense involving conduct requiring registration pursuant to Health and Safety Code Section 11590 (controlled substance offenders) or any felony offense involving drugs (including possession, sale, distribution, transporting or conspiracy).
  • A felony offense involving the use of force and violence upon a person or another, or a misdemeanor offense for same within the last five (5) years.

Physical and Mental Requirements
Mobility: frequent performance moderate manual labor; frequent sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time; occasional bending, twisting, kneeling or squatting. Lifting: frequent lifting up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision: constant use of overall vision. Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. Emotional/ Psychological: frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: occasional exposure to loud noises and large groups of people.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Conditions will vary depending on assignment. Work may also be performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to street or field noise and year round weather conditions. Duties may include some recreation-related field noise. Work often occurs at remote locations. Positions may require some overtime and weekend work and travel is rare.
SICK LEAVE: Employees employed with the City of Modesto for six (6) full pay periods or more receive sick leave credit at the rate of twenty-four (24) hours or three (3) days per calendar year, per AB 1522.

PUBLIC AGENCY RETIREMENT SERVICES ALTERNATE RETIREMENT SYSTEM PLAN (PARS ARS): Total contribution of 7.5% - employee pays 3.75% of wages (pre-tax) and the City pays 3.75%.
