Location: City Hall
Part-time, 15-20 hours per week
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm * some evening/weekend hours for events are required
$15.00/hour

Role Overview

The Program Assistant for Read Ready Covington reports to the Director of Read Ready Covington and plays an important role in supporting early childhood literacy programming across the city. This position will be based at City Hall and will support literacy events at a variety of Covington sites. You'll help plan and execute events, maintain program records, and collaborate with schools, community centers, and local businesses to champion literacy and learning. It's a dynamic, flexible role with space for creativity, collaboration, and making a meaningful impact in Covington.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Additional duties may be assigned.
  • Assist with planning and executing community literacy events (e.g., story times, educational fests, small group activities).
  • Coordinate incentives and participation tracking for city reading challenges such as the Mayor's Reading Challenge, Read Across Covington, and Word Walk Passport Program.
  • Represent Read Ready Covington at partner events throughout the year.
  • Support professional communication efforts including emails, newsletters, and social media content.
  • Attend and document meetings by taking accurate notes and distributing written meeting minutes.
  • Maintain accurate records and reporting using digital tools.
  • Organize and manage literacy program inventory and resources.
  • Provide general support for early literacy outreach and promotional efforts across the city.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate degree in education or 3+years college coursework in related areas of study.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
  • Reliable transportation and valid Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Spanish language proficiency.
  • Experience with educational programming or community outreach.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication tools.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with community engagement or educational programming.
Skills:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); Canva experience is a plus.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong note-taking and editing skills.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail and time management.
Abilities:
  • Spanish proficiency highly preferred but not required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (event setup, supply handling).
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Ability to interact with children, families, and community partners in a professional and friendly manner.
Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, and interact with the public.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
  • Occasionally required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors at events.
