  • Set an innovative course for the long-term growth and fiscal vitality of the division, leading, and enabling continued development of transformational clinical and research programs,
  • Recruit and retain exceptional and diverse faculty,
  • Identify emerging and new areas of emphasis and promise,
  • Enable world-class clinical and educational programming
  • Prioritize mentorship and develop/refine the academic skills of existing faculty and clinical staff to fulfill the division’s mission and responsibilities, including promoting our culture of collaboration and patient-centered care.

The Division of Hospital Medicine includes one of the largest groups of pediatric hospital medicine researchers in the country with primary research faculty members partnering with clinical faculty to publish approximately 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and receive > $2,000,000 in extramural grant funding in the most recent fiscal year. Areas of emphasis include health equity, transitions of care, high value care, children with medical complexity, patient and family engagement, and precision medication dosing. The division also has a proven track record of its faculty receiving K-award or equivalent career-development funding. Individualized career development is provided through mentoring within the Division of Hospital Medicine and across the institution. Opportunities for collaboration are fostered through weekly divisional research meetings and other collaborative research groups throughout the Department of Pediatrics and with the University of Cincinnati. The division has a robust research infrastructure that includes 10 clinical research coordinators and established collaborations with faculty in the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Division faculty also serve in editorial leadership roles in many of the leading journals in the field, including the Journal of Hospital Medicine, Hospital Pediatrics, and Pediatrics.

The division, which provides care through the Hospital Medicine Services at 2 campuses, has developed innovative models of care, including consultation and co-management for surgical inpatients through the Hospital Medicine Surgical Service and for adults through the Hospital Medicine Adult Care Service, as well as a clinical service that cares for children with high medical complexity. The division has a strong partnership with the Division of General and Community Pediatrics and its outpatient Complex Care Center as well as the many other subspecialty divisions involved in the care of these children.

The division is also a leader in systems improvement and educational scholarship. Division education innovations include leading development of a national research curriculum for all pediatric hospital medicine fellowships, creation of innovative platforms for systems orientation, clinical content, education, and research skill development. The division’s renowned fellowship programs include a 3-year Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship with its inaugural cohort in 2011 and a Clinical Informatics Fellowship. The pediatric hospital medicine fellowship program was among the first such programs to receive ACGME accreditation. The clinical informatics fellowship is one of only a handful nationally based in a children’s hospital.

  • Continue building a transformational research program
  • Support synergistic collaborations to improve patient outcomes
