Position Title: Assistant Professor of Sociology
Employment Type: Full Time, 9-month, Exempt, Faculty Appointment
Reports To: The Chair of the Sociology Department
Full-Time Pay Range: Commensurate with experience

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for full-time (9-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sociology with an applied emphasis in Social Welfare/Social Work beginning in August 2025. The successful candidate will have a primary appointment and tenure home in the Sociology Department, will teach and mentor undergraduate students, engage in scholarly research, and participate in University and professional service. The department seeks applicants who can teach introductory courses as well as courses in mental health, substance use and abuse, family dynamics, family violence, child and family welfare, death and dying, program evaluation, and social welfare as an institution. There may be a future opportunity to create curriculum and programming in Social Work.

Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching, evidence of scholarly productivity, and a clear research agenda. The department particularly values scholars whose work connects to communities.

The position requires teaching (4/4 teaching load, 24 credits per year), research, and service responsibilities. Opportunities to teach in UW-Parkside's Master of Arts in Applied Professional Studies and additional courses in the summer semester may be available for additional compensation depending upon the needs of the Department.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Sociology, PhD or DSW in Social Work or related field (ABD candidates who are expected to complete their degree by August 2025 will also be considered) from an accredited university;
  • Demonstrated potential for high-quality instruction of courses in Sociology that address mental health, substance use and abuse, family dynamics, family violence, child and family welfare, death and dying, program evaluation, social work research methods, social work, and social welfare as an institution.
  • Demonstrated potential for providing instruction in online, hybrid, and/or face-to-face formats;
  • Experience working with students and staff from culturally diverse backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated potential for effective service to the institution, leadership in the discipline, and engagement with the community; and, Commitment to scholarship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSW from a CSWE-accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated Social Work or Social Welfare service experience.
  • Evidence of high-quality instruction of courses in Sociology that address mental health, substance use and abuse, family dynamics, family violence, child and family welfare, death and dying, program evaluation, social work research methods, social work, and social welfare as an institution.
  • Experience designing and implementing learning experiences that integrate community engagement within the curriculum.
  • Evidence of providing instruction in online, hybrid, and/or face-to-face formats.
  • Evidence of coordinating community-based learning experiences.
  • Interest in advising and mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Potential for (and/or record of) securing extramural funding.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach 24 credits (4/4 workload) per academic year (with the exception of designated release and/or reassignment time);
  • Teach undergraduate sociology courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online modalities (some online courses are offered in accelerated 7-week formats);
  • Design and implement curriculum that aligns with student learning outcomes, program learning outcomes, and general education learning outcomes and assist in departmental assessment reporting;
  • Participate in, and contribute to curriculum development by planning, developing, and evaluating new and existing courses and curricula;
  • Maintain a high-quality research agenda with the expectation of peer-reviewed publication;
  • Participate in department/division meetings, committees, and other activities; and
  • Provide service to the university, community, and the relevant academic discipline profession; service can include advising student organizations.

  • Knowledge, experience, and ability to teach courses in Sociology that address mental health, substance use and abuse, family dynamics, family violence, child and family welfare, death and dying, program evaluation, social work research methods, and social welfare as an institution.
  • Knowledge, experience, and ability to conduct research and scholarly activities.
  • Ability to contribute to a work environment that encourages intellectual growth and respect for all others.
  • Ability to analyze data for program improvement.
