Position Overview
We are looking for a detail-oriented Professional Coding Specialist I to join a healthcare team responsible for accurate medical record coding and claims support.
This role involves reviewing clinical documentation after patient visits and procedures and determining the appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with inpatient, surgical, and pediatric medical records and have a strong understanding of current coding standards.
What You'll Do
- Review medical records and provider documentation to determine appropriate codes.
- Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and E/M codes.
- Code inpatient encounters, procedures, and surgical services.
- Review complex cases and resolve coding discrepancies.
- Apply appropriate modifiers and identify potential billing/coding issues.
- Research documentation and coding guidelines when clarification is needed.
- Work with internal teams to resolve coding-related questions and issues.
- Maintain accuracy and productivity while managing assigned workloads independently.
- Protect patient information and follow healthcare privacy and compliance requirements.
- Adapt to updated coding guidelines, workflows, and departmental processes.
What We're Looking For
- Hands-on experience in professional/medical coding.
- Strong exposure to inpatient and surgical coding.
- Experience with pediatric records/coding.
- Solid understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and E/M coding.
- Good knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Ability to identify documentation and coding errors.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Good written and verbal communication.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team.
Education
- College-level coursework or equivalent experience in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Formal training in ICD-10 and CPT-4/E&M coding.
Certification
Candidates must hold one of the following certifications or obtain an applicable certification within the required timeframe:
- CPC / CPC-A
- CCS-P
- RHIT
- RHIA
- AAPC specialty certification
Preferred Certifications
- COSC Certified Orthopedic Surgery Coder
- CEMC Certified Evaluation and Management Coder
