Position: Hardware Engineer

Location: Valley Green, PA

Amphenol High Speed Products Group is the market leader for high speed, high bandwidth electrical connectors for the Telecom/Datacom market (Mobile Networks, Storage, Servers, Routers, Switches, etc.). Our products help to enable the electronics revolution and remain a key enabler for all the major Tier 1 OEMs globally. Our global headquarters is located in Nashua, NH and we have design, sales, and manufacturing locations globally. We are currently seeking Product Development Engineers to join our Cable Backplane Business Unit in Valley Green, PA.

High speed cable backplane systems enable most of the world’s IT and datacom; including leading the way for the AI/ML revolution; and require some of the most advanced manufacturing technologies, and highest levels of precision, in the engineering world. These challenges require the most creative, technical minds, and ultimately provide the most rewarding experience for an engineer.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking experienced mechanical engineers to join Amphenol Cable Backplane Product Development team. This role will focus on Precision Engineering and serve a pivotal role on the team, blending expert knowledge from electrical and mechanical engineering to develop, design, and maintain the mechanisms on our next generation of high speed cable backplanes. This role will design float mechanisms, cartridges, and similar mechanisms that enable our cabled backplanes to solve our customer’s needs. This role also requires interaction with internal manufacturing sites, external vendors, and all of the other engineering disciplines within the organization.

A strong candidate should be motivated by technical challenges, know how to be a truly collaborative member of a team, and be willing to wear a number of hats throughout the many phases of a project.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understand and adapt to evolving industry needs and product requirements.
  • Collaborate with NPI and Machine Design teams to ensure efficient, high-volume production of high-quality products.
  • Work with the Signal Integrity team to support electrical performance requirements through mechanical design.
  • Ensure mechanical design meets high reliability and quality standards over the product's life, adhering to industry and internal specifications.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate electronic control systems into mechanical frameworks.
  • Assist in material selection, including metals, plastics, and surface coatings.
  • Develop initial product specifications and technical documentation.
  • Interface with customers during various project phases and support the sales process.
  • Work with internal and external suppliers on Design for Manufacture (DFM), prototyping, production tooling design, and qualifications.
  • Provide technical assistance to product marketing and sales teams.
  • Participate in fixture/tooling design and manage test plans.
  • Contribute to cost reduction projects, such as alternative material discovery and manufacturing efficiency improvements.
  • Occasionally present project updates to upper management.
  • Attend industry trade shows, exhibitions, and conferences as needed.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering (MS preferred) or equivalent experience in the electronics industry, with an emphasis on precision engineering preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in CAD software (Creo).
  • 3+ years of industry experience in design.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a history of collaboration and execution in product design stages.
  • Good understanding of GD&T methodologies, tolerance analysis, and FEA tools.
  • Knowledge of copper alloys, high-performance engineering plastics, and experience with CNC milled parts or sheet metal fabrication.
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic team environment.
  • Strong multitasking and project management abilities.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 15% domestically and internationally.
