Job description
General Description of Position Under the general direction and supervision of the Dean and responsible Associate Deans, the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Instructor is responsible for providing instruction, developing, and updating the program courses in a classroom/laboratory environment at the Milford campus, in the Prison Education Program (PEP) and/or other SCC locations. This position is also responsible for lab equipment maintenance and repair, advising students, and working with the program and College committees. This is a full-time, regular position. Essential Functions Provide Student Instruction in Program Courses as Assigned
  • Provide engaged instruction to a diverse student population in the HVAC/R Program.
  • Prepare necessary instructional materials, including lesson plans, instruction sheets, and tests, to promote maximum learning for the students.
  • Determine the appropriate material to be covered in the courses assigned to teach (subject to program chair and division approval).
  • Operate and utilize as part of the teaching process appropriate audio-visual and multimedia equipment and software.
Create and Develop Teaching Aids and Supplements
  • Create visual communication presentations, such as but not limited to PowerPoint, or other visual graphics software, and use an interactive projector.
  • Develop instructional aids on the computer, and compile a library of training films on demand and videos to supplement instructional techniques that reflect accurate and up-to-date methods used in the HVAC/R industry.
Develop New Courses and Update Existing Courses
  • Share responsibility for developing new courses and updating existing courses as required to keep the HVAC/R program current with industry standards and processes.
  • New course development includes writing course objectives, helping develop syllabi, developing handouts and tests, researching textbooks and online resources, and gathering data for course use.
  • Updating of existing courses to ensure that each course is current with industry standards based on input from the Workforce Leadership Team or knowledge gained from the program DACUM is required.
Maintain and Upgrade HVAC/R Classroom/Laboratory Instructional Facilities, Instruments, and Equipment
  • Share responsibility for the maintenance of all instructional facilities, equipment, and program classrooms to ensure that they are maintained in a safe and proper working order for student use.
Complete and Maintain Program and Student Records
  • Responsible for maintaining permanent student records on courses taught and following and enforcing college policies regarding attendance, grading, student achievement, and privacy.
  • Use of the instructional online course management software (Canvas) shell and other programs is required in addition to effective use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Assist with the purchase of instructional supplies and equipment.
Maintain Technical Competency in Teaching Area
  • Attend seminars, professional association meetings, conferences, educational workshops, or other related training sessions to continually engage in self-study to stay technically competent.
  • Participate in college activities related to professional development (technical and instructional), diversity, and safety.
Participate in Area Campus-Based Program Activities and Teams
  • Attend, participate, and support program activities (i.e., workforce leadership team meetings, Discovery Days, division meetings, etc.) and College activities and teams as requested.
Act as a Technical Advisor for Students in the HVAC/R Program
  • Advise the HVAC/R program students on academic standing, support, and explain College policies and procedures with students to complete all records and forms, etc., as necessary for proper articulation and program operation.
  • Other tasks included in this area: assisting students in selecting and registering for courses; advising students on their academic progress, courses needed for graduation, and generally serving as the first line of communication between students and the College staff.
Individual Development Plan (New Instructors)
  • Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Associate Dean and as defined and supported on the Professional Development website.
Professional Development
  • All faculty are required to compile three (3) different professional development activities during the year as defined and supported on the Professional Development website.
Annual Safety Training
  • Faculty are required to complete all annual Safety Training as required by the College.
Perform Other Campus and Program Duties as Assigned
  • Duties will include, but not be limited to, substitute teaching as required, assisting in developing the budget, advising the program director as requested, supporting and promoting the College, the campus, the HVAC/R program, supporting student recruitment, assisting in the security of all College and program facilities, instruments, tools, materials, and equipment, and assisting in supervising student help.
  • Participation in determining and updating the Strategic Plan and completion of the annual Assessment process are required.

  • Serve as a technical advisor from the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology Program to assist other programs at the College.
  • Provide assistance to other College Divisions/programs/ departments as requested to ensure College policies and procedures are followed.
  • Teach evening or off-campus Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Technology-related classes for specific training requests.
  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Possess current knowledge and work experience in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology fields. This will include the following: planning, designing, materials ordering, assemblies, and procedures used in residential and light commercial HVAC/R construction. Design and prepare the working drawings for the College house projects and the HVAC/R processes used in residential/light commercial construction.
  • Ability and experience in the use of microcomputers, word processing, and software applications related to estimating and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to demonstrate all types of theory-to-job application processes required of an HVAC/R technician for the particular courses assigned to teach. These include, but are not limited to, board drafting, estimating, plumbing, Hydronics, codes, plumbing-related service, and installation and construction safety.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication competencies necessary to conduct classroom and laboratory instruction in working with a diverse student population.
  • Ability to maintain a classroom/lab environment that is conducive to learning, including the ability to maintain proper classroom order.
  • Prepare tests and quizzes that are pertinent to the lectures delivered and laboratory experiences provided, and present them on a regular basis. Evaluate and return tests, quizzes, and other assigned work within a short period of time to keep students informed of their progress.
  • Ability to develop lab experiences that as closely as possible simulate real business and industry processes. Be able to evaluate the students’ ability to perform the lab assignments as objectively as possible.
  • Ability to maintain student interest through the use of various types of teaching media and techniques.
  • Ability to organize and present course material in a logical and timely manner using effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with students and College staff in all types of working relationships.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (one to three hours) when supervising lab work and during class times.
  • Ability to lift from the floor to five feet high, equipment and supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
  • Possess a working knowledge of the Hazard Communication Standard/ Hazard and Chemical Right-to-Know laws and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
  • Ability to use basic computer skills.
  • The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • AAS Degree in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Technology or a directly related field, and 2 years of current work experience in the related field.
OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Technology or related field.
OR
  • Ten (10) years of relevant work experience and the ability to complete an AAS degree in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Technology within 2 years of hire
AND
  • The candidate should possess EPA certification, or obtained by the date of hire.
Desired Qualifications
  • Teaching experience in a secondary or post-secondary setting.
  • Teaching experience in online and hybrid formats, flipped classroom, and progressive experience in utilizing technology in curriculum development and delivery.
