Job Description:

Responsibilities.

  • The Lab Analyst must certify for each assigned job function and will be responsible for routinely performing analyses in any or all of the following areas:

    Mass Spectrometric Analyses. Determine the isotopic contents of nuclear materials and elemental composition of various samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS).
  • Wet Chemistry Analyses. Determine chemical composition and impurities in nuclear materials and other samples using titrimetric, gravimetric, colorimetric, and chromatographic methods.
  • Environmental Analyses. Perform analytical testing to ensure compliance with regulatory standards related to employee safety and environmental protection.
  • Metallurgical Analyses. Assess material properties through metallography, mechanical testing, and corrosion testing. Perform precision grinding, polishing, and microscopy to reveal microstructures such as grain size, porosity, and bonding. Conduct tensile, bend, and compression tests, as well as corrosion testing under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.
  • Perform routine laboratory duties within radioactive material–controlled areas and pass a Nuclear Safety Training Test.
  • Work with acids, bases, solvents, radioactive materials, and other hazardous substances using appropriate PPE, demonstrating understanding of Industrial and Nuclear Safety guidelines.
  • Use precision laboratory techniques including pipetting, titrating, analytical weighing, quantitative transfers, and volumetric dilutions.
  • Operate the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and instrument control computers for data collection, analysis, storage, and retrieval.
  • Monitor laboratory equipment performance, respond to alarm conditions, perform preventative maintenance, identify malfunctions, and complete basic repairs or adjustments.
  • Perform mathematical unit conversions and interpret complex instruction manuals, engineering drawings, schematics, and interactive software programs.
  • Prepare reagents and working standards using proper laboratory techniques and knowledge of reference material storage requirements.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with colleagues and customers.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Qualifications / Requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a physical science from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 18 months of work experience in a commercial and/or military laboratory environment.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of demonstrated experience in at least one (1) of the following areas:

    Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry.
  • Ion chromatography.
  • Liquid or gas chromatography.
  • Metallurgical analyses.
  • Ability and willingness to work various shift arrangements, including overtime, to maintain continuous lab coverage.
  • Ability and willingness to intermittently lift and carry up to 45 lbs.
  • Ability to pass applicable quality control vision (Ishihara) test requirements.
Additional Desired Characteristics.
  • Strong knowledge of standard analytical laboratory methodologies (titrimetry, gravimetry, spectrophotometry, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information effectively in verbal and written formats.
  • Previous experience in the nuclear industry and/or working with uranium.
  • Previous experience using a computer-based Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Experience with electronic data transfer and/or digital image analysis.
  • Experience working in production support laboratories.
