Job description

Reports to: Airfield Maintenance Supervisor
Status: Non‑exempt

Job Purpose

The Electrician – Airfield is a skilled electrical trades professional responsible for providing electrical services for the airfield, terminal, facilities, properties, and equipment. While the primary focus is on the airport’s airfield systems, this position supports all maintenance teams as needed.
During inclement weather, this role is essential in helping keep the runway open, the airport’s primary revenue source.

Duties and Responsibilities

Focus Area – Airfield

  • Maintain airport‑owned airfield lighting and NAVAIDs in accordance with:
    • LEX Airport Certification Manual
    • FAA Advisory Circulars
    • NFPA and NEC regulations
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain:
    • Airfield lighting circuits
    • Roadway and parking lot lighting
    • Power distribution systems
    • Switchgear and transformers
    • Garages and facility electrical systems
    • Telephone and radio communications
    • Airfield control systems
    • CCTV and security systems
    • Automatic security gate systems
    • Baggage claim equipment
    • Secondary and branch circuit wiring
  • Operate and monitor the Airfield Lighting Control System (ALCMS).

Secondary Area – Facilities

  • Assist in maintenance operations involving lighting, high‑ and low‑voltage power, communications, access control, and conveyance systems.
  • Provide reliable electrical distribution for airport buildings, rental properties, and lighting systems.
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical services (underground or overhead) in accordance with NEC, local codes, and utility specifications.
  • Troubleshoot PLC input/output circuits.
  • Analyze information and evaluate solutions to determine the best course of action.
  • Inspect equipment, structures, and materials to identify errors or defects.
  • Coordinate projects and schedules with outside contractors.
  • Coordinate equipment specifications and technical details with airport departments.
  • Review designs and plans for alterations or improvements; provide input on electrical impacts.
  • Source and purchase necessary parts and equipment.
  • Maintain daily logs and project documentation.
  • Operate equipment such as trenchers, snow removal equipment, backhoes, forklifts, and aerial lifts.
  • Operate power tools including pipe threaders, grinders, core drills, masonry drills/saws, and electrical/fiber‑optic testing equipment.
  • Assist other trades in troubleshooting jet bridges and generator issues.
  • Support other trades within the maintenance group.

Work Order Management

  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) tasks and respond to work orders promptly.
  • Use the CMMS to review and prioritize work orders.
  • Complete work orders accurately, documenting date, work performed, parts used, time required, and downtime.
  • Report completion of work and communicate status updates.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date PM schedules.
  • Record all PM activity in the CMMS or maintenance logs.

Additional Essential Functions

  • Communicate work activity effectively with team members and supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean working environment.
  • Maintain positive and cooperative working relationships.
  • Be available for callbacks during emergencies and adverse weather, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform snow/ice removal using over 20 types of snow equipment; work up to 13 hours on / 11 hours off during weather events.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or trade school degree.
  • Completion of electrical apprenticeship or coursework.
  • Two to five years of journeyman‑level electrical experience.
  • Current Journeyman Electrician License issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
  • Willingness to obtain Airfield Certified Employee (ACE) – Airfield Lighting Maintenance certification or equivalent.
  • Ability to perform wireman tasks involving emergency repairs.
  • Knowledge of state, local, and federal electrical codes, including airport‑specific regulations.
  • Ability to read schematics, floor plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and building codes.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non‑technical audiences.
  • Ability to stay current with technical knowledge and apply new skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for work orders and logs.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, tenants, vendors, and the public.
  • Self‑motivated with strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Advanced critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to handle job‑related stress.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft products and ability to learn a web‑based payroll system.

Working Conditions

  • Full‑time, on‑site position.
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to:
    • Noise, fumes, chemicals, fuels, deicers, and airborne particles
    • Mechanical hazards
    • High or precarious places
    • Electrical shock risks
    • Extreme temperatures and weather
  • May require extended shifts during special projects or emergencies.
  • Snow removal events require long shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids.
  • Work near high‑voltage power sources.

Physical Requirements

  • Classified as “heavy” to “very heavy” work.
  • Must be able to:
  • Speak clearly and hear normal conversation, alarms, and radio communications
  • Maintain sufficient visual acuity with or without corrective lenses
  • Work near aircraft, high voltage, and underground utility areas
  • Work in confined and/or high spaces
  • Climb, lift, balance, walk, stoop, bend, and handle materials
  • Traverse uneven or steep terrain
  • Stand, walk, and perform repetitive motions for prolonged periods
  • Operate motorized vehicles and equipment for long periods (up to 13 hours)
  • Lift and carry up to 80 pounds continuously
  • Access all areas of the airport and enter/exit all vehicles and lifts independently

Special Requirements

  • Valid Kentucky driver’s license or CDL (or ability to obtain).
  • Pass random drug screenings.
  • Pass background investigation including CHRC, STA, and employment verification.
  • Maintain airport security badge access.
  • Complete required initial and annual recurrent training (security, airfield driving, etc.).
  • Maintain a smartphone with voice, data, app, and text capability per policy.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.

Travel Requirements

  • Limited travel required (up to 5%).
  • Occasional travel for meetings, training, or certifications (e.g., IESALC, airfield lighting training, license exams).
