Tooling Design Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Mechanical Engineer to join our Field Service team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and delivering custom field service equipment to safely and efficiently service the iron-air battery product in the field. Your work will encompass electro-mechanical system design, prototyping, and integration of large field service tools suitable for challenging outdoor environments.
Responsibilities
- Design material handling equipment for lifting, moving, and servicing modules and other components in the field.
- Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with broader teams to build integrated units.
- Work with vendors and field service engineers to transition designs from the prototype stage to a hardened and weatherized field service tool.
- Perform testing, hand calculations, and FEA to inform specifications and future design directions.
- Release designs consistent with company and team best practices, including drawings and tolerance analysis.
- Document system designs, usage guidelines, and validation procedures.
- Support troubleshooting, maintenance, and continuous improvement of field service tools.
- Travel up to 20% to various offices or vendor sites.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering or a related field.
- 7+ years of industry experience in mechanical design.
- Experience leading design work for complex mechanical systems and structural design, using FEA for structural analysis.
- Experience in electro-mechanical system integration, including motors, actuators, and drive systems.
- Proficiency in CAD, specifically SolidWorks, NX, AutoCAD.
- Proficiency in ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, or SimScale.
- Proficient with prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop environment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Advanced understanding of mechanical power transmission, motion control, gear ratios, and torque calculation.
- Knowledge in HumanCAD or Siemens Jack is a plus.
- Sense of urgency and self-driven to meet challenging schedule targets.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to balance speed, rigor, and safety.
Work Environment
You will work alongside a team of 2 Field Service Engineers, contributing collaboratively rather than leading the project solo.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Berkeley, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $80.00 - $90.00/hr.
