Job description

Overview: The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.

About the role:
The candidate will work with the Cambridge-based quantum team to set up and maintain state-of-the-art lab equipment and infrastructure. This is a lab technician role, focusing on hands-on hardware and infrastructure support for our experimental quantum computing effort.

Responsibilities:
Set up and maintain electronics racks: This includes installing and wiring electrical equipment such as rf signal generators, signal analyzers, etc.
Assemble and wire cryogenic systems: Assist with the installation of cryogenic components and cable assemblies into cryogenic systems. This also involves wiring up quantum processor setups within the systems.
Build custom hardware: Design and build custom electronics boxes, mechanical parts, and other small-scale hardware.
Maintain lab infrastructure: Perform routine maintenance on critical cryogenic infrastructure, including compressors, pumps, and chilled water systems.
Lightweight software tasks: Contribute to lightweight software development for the control and maintenance of various pieces of lab equipment.

Requirements:
We're looking for a highly motivated and hands-on individual with a passion for hardware and infrastructure support in a cutting-edge research environment.

Hardware Proficiency:
Demonstrated experience with the setup, wiring, and maintenance of electronic and mechanical systems.
Proficiency with common lab tools including multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, soldering stations, and hand tools.
Ability to read and interpret technical documentation such as schematics, wiring diagrams, instrument manuals, and assembly instructions.

Infrastructure Support:
Basic understanding of mechanical systems (, pumps, compressors, fluid lines) for routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
Experience working with delicate components and precise assembly procedures.

Problem-Solving & Attention to Detail:
Strong aptitude for troubleshooting and problem-solving in a practical, hands-on setting.
Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.

Collaboration & Learning:
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
Eagerness to learn new skills and adapt to evolving technical challenges in a fast-paced R&D environment.

Bonus Points (Nice-to-Have):
Experience with cryogenic systems, vacuum systems, or dilution refrigerators.
Familiarity with RF/microwave components and test equipment.
Basic programming or scripting skills (, Python).

Duration of engagement: months
Working schedule and hours: Mon-Fri am-pm, hours/week
Language required: English
Coding language required: Python

Education: Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.

Responsibilities include:
- Document test or verification results and test methodologies are in compliance with internal or external requirements with some guidance.
- Identify and select test equipment (, oscilloscopes, testers, microscope, chambers, analyzers, generators, optical debug tools) with some supervision.
- Implement procedures to demonstrate product compliance and manage evaluation of test equipment required to verify product performance during qualification tests.
- Provide assistance in conducting test plans and reviews, including documentation of experiment conditions and results, with minimal supervision.
- Report bugs during verification and identify corrective action, where needed, with external suppliers or internal development teams.
- Conduct effective testing and product improvement in accordance with software test plans and procedures by creating, implementing, and sharing information on critical tests.
- Contribute to identifying test methodologies and developing new tools and workflows to improve product quality, testing efficiency, and validation processes.
- Conduct audits of validation or performance qualification processes to ensure compliance with internal or regulatory requirements.

Minimum role qualification requires proficiency in:
- Debugging skills
- Situational leadership
- Domain specific knowledge
- Test design
- Hardware architecture (Hardware/OS)
- Industry knowledge
- Hardware Engineering (Knowledge)
- Hardware validation planning and execution
- Data analysis and synthesis
- Test planning
- Engineering skills
