Job description

Location: A remote position requiring regular travel to sites throughout CA

AlphaBEST Education, Inc. is a mission-driven organization dedicated to improving education outcomes for students across the country. We partner with schools and districts to deliver high-quality after-school and expanded learning programs that put more wonder in the world. As we grow our California operations, we are seeking a dynamic California Director to lead our Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P/ELOP) efforts statewide.

Job Summary

Reporting directly to senior leadership, the California Director plays a pivotal role in the effective implementation and management of AlphaBEST's California Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) operations. This role ensures that all initiatives adhere to organizational standards and maintain high levels of fidelity within the state. The California Director's primary responsibility is to ensure contract retention through the fidelity of program delivery, operational implementation, and relationship cultivation. Additionally, this role is critical in the achievement of earning and realizing revenue goals for the region.

This position requires a strategic leader who will oversee the execution of high-quality programs and lead a team of Area Managers to provide essential accountability, technical assistance, coaching, and support to field operations - thereby enhancing program effectiveness and addressing any emerging challenges. The California Director will serve as the main relationship holder for District Liaisons on day-to-day program and operational matters, collaborating with senior leadership and various internal departments to communicate contract changes and engage resources such as staffing, training, and finance. This role is also a key component in contract negotiations with the Partner and Customer Success team regarding existing district and charter partners.

The ideal candidate will be based in a California metro area with close proximity to a major airport and must be willing and able to travel throughout the state on a regular basis to support program sites and district partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Lead a team of Area Managers to ensure effective implementation and management of ELOP programs at the site level, maintaining alignment with organizational standards and program fidelity statewide.
  • Participate in appropriate Expanded Learning Program meetings and activities sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE) and the After School Regional Lead system, ensuring AlphaBEST is actively represented and engaged across the system of support.
  • Set clear performance expectations for team members and hold them accountable for achieving program goals and adhering to organizational standards.
  • Foster the growth of leadership capabilities among Area Managers by providing targeted coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise Area Managers, ensuring they have access to ongoing training and developmental resources.

Program Quality & Operations

  • Ensure that program implementation and support is of excellent quality and in alignment with AlphaBEST's program design and contractual obligations with district partners.
  • Deploy technical assistance and support to field operations, addressing challenges and optimizing program effectiveness and compliance with quality standards.
  • Work with internal departments to communicate contract changes and effectively manage resources including staffing, training, and finance to support program needs.
  • Ensure implementation of strategic plans for program delivery, including setting objectives, monitoring progress, and making data-driven adjustments as needed.
  • Hold Area Managers accountable to using metrics and feedback to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes to enhance program quality.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and contractual obligations related to ELOP implementation and management. Proactively identify and mitigate risk.
  • Implement and monitor performance improvement plans for underperforming team members, providing support and resources as needed to facilitate success.
  • Visit program sites regularly throughout California to maintain program quality, licensing standards, and customer satisfaction.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement regional policies and procedures to drive maximum enrollment across the state.

Partner Experience

  • Partner with senior leadership to sustain and deepen customer experience statewide.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for District Liaisons, managing day-to-day program and operational activities and ensuring smooth communication and coordination.
  • Participate in contract negotiations with the Partner and Customer Success team, managing relationships with existing district and charter partners to ensure favorable terms and successful renewals.
  • Build strong, long-term partnerships with school administrators and district leaders across California.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Education, Business Administration, or related field; master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in education, expanded learning, and/or nonprofit sectors.
  • Minimum of 3 years leading contract negotiations and driving business growth goals.
  • At least 4 years of management experience with a demonstrated record of effectively leading regional or multiple teams, with outcomes-based performance overseeing 300+ staff.
  • Deep ELO-P operational knowledge: direct experience implementing and running California's Expanded Learning Opportunities Program mandates.
  • Experience developing and executing local strategic plans aligned with broader organizational goals.
  • Budget management experience overseeing budgets of $10 million or more.
  • Strong performance-driven leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to exceed tactical and strategic objectives.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to develop industry relationships; socially adept with high emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive and confidential information to various stakeholders and identify solutions with a sense of urgency.
  • Must reside in a California metro area with proximity to a major airport and be available for regular statewide travel.

Other Responsibilities
  • Maintain the highest degree of confidentiality in all matters.
  • Comply with all AlphaBEST organizational policies and procedures.
