Job description

Tax Manager

We are seeking an experienced and client-focused Tax Manager to join our growing firm. This individual will play a key role in leading tax compliance and advisory engagements, managing client relationships, and mentoring a team of tax professionals. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and the ability to provide proactive tax planning strategies to a diverse client base. This position offers significant exposure to firm leadership, opportunities for advancement, and the ability to make a meaningful impact on both client success and internal team development.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Compliance & Advisory

  • Oversee and manage the preparation and review of complex tax returns for corporations, partnerships, individuals, and trusts
  • Ensure accurate and timely compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations
  • Provide strategic tax planning and consulting services to minimize tax exposure and support clients' financial objectives
  • Advise clients on entity structure, tax-saving opportunities, and long-term planning strategies
  • Identify and mitigate tax risks while ensuring compliance with evolving tax laws and regulations

Client Relationship Management

  • Manage and grow a portfolio of clients, serving as the primary point of contact for all tax-related matters
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term client relationships through proactive communication and high-quality service delivery
  • Understand clients' businesses, industries, and financial goals to provide tailored tax solutions
  • Respond to client inquiries and resolve issues in a timely and professional manner

Technical Research & Thought Leadership

  • Conduct in-depth research on complex tax issues and develop well-supported conclusions
  • Interpret and apply changes in tax legislation and communicate impacts to clients and internal teams
  • Draft technical memoranda and documentation supporting tax positions and recommendations
  • Serve as a technical resource for staff and senior team members

Engagement & Financial Management

  • Manage the full lifecycle of engagements, including scoping, quoting, budgeting, execution, and completion
  • Develop and monitor engagement budgets, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within scope
  • Prepare, review, and approve invoices; manage billing and collections to ensure strong realization
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and profitability across engagements

Team Leadership & Development

  • Supervise, manage, and mentor tax seniors and staff, providing ongoing coaching and professional development
  • Review work prepared by team members, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance
  • Delegate work effectively and manage team workflow to meet deadlines
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment and assist in resolving team conflicts
  • Participate in recruiting, onboarding, and retention efforts as the firm continues to grow

Qualifications

  • CPA designation preferred (or actively pursuing)
  • 5+ years of progressive public accounting experience with a strong focus on tax
  • Strong technical knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations across multiple entity types
  • Proven ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to supervise and develop teams
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's in Taxation or related field preferred
  • Proficiency in tax software such as CCH Axcess and/or ProSystem fx
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Excel
