Medical Assistant Clinical, Adjunct Faculty

The Medical Assisting Clinical Adjunct Faculty performs duties and responsibilities under the general direction of the Vice Provost and Dean of the Health Sciences, Education & Wellness Institute. This part-time adjunct faculty member provides in-person instruction in the Medical Assisting program, with a primary focus on clinical procedures and medication administration courses.

The faculty member is responsible for delivering Medical Assisting clinical instruction that aligns with Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB) Standards and current clinical best practices. Instruction is primarily offered during daytime hours, with the potential for evening course assignments in future academic quarters based on program needs.

This role emphasizes hands-on skills instruction, student competency development, and preparation of students for safe and effective clinical practice in a variety of healthcare settings.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. Compensation is $43.80 - $53.78 per hour. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

About the Department

To foster the successful completion of our diverse students' educational goals, the Health Sciences, Education & Wellness Institute advances life-long wellness, learning, teaching, and service excellence. The Institute provides a wide variety of accessible, rigorous, and engaging professional/technical courses, programs, and credentials that are responsive to individual, institutional, and community needs, prospects, and opportunities.

Our Institute is made up of 16 unique programs focused on providing excellent education and training for many professions in healthcare, education, wellness.

Allied Health professionals are specially trained to support physicians and institutions in either clinical or administrative areas. They may assist physicians with patients and minor surgeries, draw blood, run medical lab testing equipment, document patient information in the electronic medical record, determine medical codes for billing purposes, run the administrative offices, be the first point of contact for patients, or provide therapy.

Essential Functions

Promote equitable teaching and learning within a diverse student body, both on-campus and in a clinical setting.

Participate in on-going curriculum development, implementation, revision, and program evaluation/assessment.

Utilize a variety of teaching and learning strategies/techniques, including integration of multicultural perspective, and integration of technology to assist students in the achievement and assessment of learning outcomes and outcomes assessment.

Practical application of cultural-competency knowledge and skills, an on-going professional development of competency.

Support college initiatives related to pluralism, including collegewide effort to dismantle barriers that can impact underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations (e.g. students with disabilities, students of color, first generation college students, LBGTQia, Veterans, 2nd language learners, etc.).

Demonstrate strong commitment to student success by creating a positive and caring learning community within the classroom/laboratory setting.

Assist with planning clinical experiences and find new clinical sites as necessary; build collaborative relationships between Bellevue College and healthcare communities.

Participate in culturally responsible advising and mentoring of students enrolled in program and prospective students, including when navigating obstacles that underrepresented ad historically marginalized student populations may experience in college.

Provide timely verbal and written assessments of student performance.

Maintain effective communication with a diverse faculty, staff and students, and clinical staff.

Review content of assigned courses and integrate content relevant to the latest research developments, recommendations, and practice in the profession.

Participate in professional development activities to maintain professional qualifications and competency in Medical Assistant education.

Follow all safety standards according to appropriate agencies including OSHA and WA DOH.

Maintain and submit student records, documentation, and program reports, including assessment data and submit then in a timely manner as required.

Perform other pertinent contractual duties and functions that may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or two (2) years equivalent education from an accredited institution in a healthcare-related discipline.

Professional credentialing/certification as a Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse with experience in ambulatory healthcare setting

Instructional experience.

Background or prior experience that shows knowledge of current trends/issues related to profession.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Ability and willingness to adapt to changing teaching schedules and situations (on campus, online, hybrid, off-site, etc.) as required by the program.

Experience addressing disproportionate impact and equity issues in higher education or other environments.

Philosophy of education appropriate for a diverse (multi-cultural, multi-ability) classroom and an advocate for pluralism.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of concepts related to teaching and learning theory, curriculum development, and assessment of learning outcomes.

Active in community and professional organizations.

Experience in student- centered and equity-minded teaching.
