Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator

Howard University Hospital | Washington, DC

Role Summary

As the Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator at Howard University Hospital, you will partner with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to drive quality and improve outcomes across every discipline involved in the care of the injured patient. Reporting to the Director of Trauma Services, you will coordinate and facilitate our multidisciplinary trauma performance improvement (PI) program — leading peer review, analyzing registry data, identifying variances, and ensuring loop closure on the issues that matter most to patient safety and Level I Trauma Center designation.

If you are an experienced trauma, emergency, or critical care nurse with a passion for data-driven quality improvement, this is your opportunity to help shape outcomes at one of the nation’s most storied academic medical centers and a designated DC Level 1 Trauma Center.

What You’ll Do

Performance Improvement Program Leadership

  • Implement and maintain a multidisciplinary trauma performance improvement (PI) program aligned with regulatory standards and Level I Trauma Center requirements
  • Partner with trauma program leadership to ensure ongoing compliance with American College of Surgeons (ACS) and other applicable trauma center designation standards
  • Lead and support initiatives to improve trauma care quality, patient safety, and operational efficiency across the continuum of care

Peer Review & Outcomes Reporting

  • Coordinate and support trauma peer review, morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings, and outcomes reporting
  • Identify, validate, and document trauma-related variances, complications, and quality indicators
  • Track trends, follow-up actions, and ensure loop closure on identified performance issues

Clinical Review & Quality Surveillance

  • Conduct clinical rounds and concurrent chart reviews to assess care quality and identify improvement opportunities in real time
  • Monitor adherence to hospital and trauma policies, procedures, and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines
  • Contribute to the development and revision of trauma clinical practice guidelines

Data Analysis & Documentation

  • Analyze trauma data and generate reports using the trauma registry and other data systems to support decision-making
  • Maintain accurate, secure documentation of PI activities, including meeting records, case reviews, and follow-up actions
  • Prepare progress reports, dashboards, and presentations for trauma leadership and hospital committees

Education, Research & Professional Engagement

  • Participate in trauma-related research, education, and professional organizations to support program development and continuous learning
  • Coordinate trauma PI–related meetings, conferences, and special activities

Compliance & Regulatory

  • Ensure all PI activities align with professional standards, regulatory agency requirements, and institutional policies
  • Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, Howard University Code of Ethics, Health Sciences Standards of Conduct, and HIPAA
  • Attend all mandatory compliance training, including HIPAA Privacy training
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patients, families, and staff

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional nursing experience in trauma, emergency room, critical care, surgical services, or another high-acuity setting.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the District of Columbia.

  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) certification required within one (1) year.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Ability to perform complex statistical analysis and highly developed problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage programs and projects.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Emergency/Trauma and/or Critical Care.

  • Demonstrated trauma performance improvement (PI)/quality, patient safety, peer review, case review, registry-data analysis, or related experience, with one (1) year of directly related experience preferred.

  • Experience in a Level I or Level II trauma center.

What We Offer

  • Work-life balance
  • Recognition and rewards for professional expertise
  • Competitive, comprehensive benefit plans including health, disability, vacation, sick leave, and 403(b) retirement plan
  • Tuition remission at Howard University for you and/or eligible dependent children — up to two (2) courses per semester
