Lead Software Engineer
The Lead Software Engineer will leverage mainframe and API-driven web technologies to build and support application solutions. Provides lead support for design and development to one or more application development teams, and leads a team of local or outsourced software engineers to build and support business application solutions.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with other development staff, including contract and offshore Software Engineers, and business product owners.
- Perform design and analysis for deliverables. Lead large team design sessions for system level architecture solutions.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for a wide range of areas, applications, and technologies; mentor other team members in design/coding standards.
- Lead analysis and general architectural design across platforms toward the development of end-to-end solutions.
- Lead development staff, including contract and off-shore developers.
- Prepare presentations and lead development meetings.
- Recommend solutions which take into consideration costs, business needs, and system impacts.
- Develop, test, implement, and document mainframe-based solutions to address business requirements.
- Participate on committees or projects to help define organization-wide standards, processes, and guidelines.
- Learn and keep pace with the latest advances in the field and rapidly grasp new technologies to support the environment and contribute to project deliverables.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, math, engineering, or other technical field, or equivalent education/experience.
- Five years of experience in mainframe technologies – COBOL, JCL, Ezytrieve, Rexx and CICS.
- Advanced proficiency and subject-matter expertise in wmA, Vantage-One, and Distribution Support System (DSS) administrative platforms.
- Experience with Schedulers/SCM/Debug: Control-M, Endevor/Changeman, Xpeditor, Abend-Aid, File Manager, IDCAMS, ICETOOL/SORT.
- Three years of experience and expertise in database design techniques and philosophies in DB2, VSAM and Oracle.
- Familiarity with designing, implementing and maintaining REST/JSON APIs that front CICS programs/transactions via z/OS Connect EE.
- Hands-on ITIL/ITSM experience (Incident, Problem, Change, Request, Knowledge).
- Experience in optimizing batch processing cycles to meet or exceed nightly, month-end, and quarter-end SLA commitments.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on legacy migration and transformation initiatives.
- Development experience using Micro Focus Enterprise Developer or Visual COBOL IDE.
- Familiarity with DB2 and VSAM performance optimization
- Exposure to enterprise production environments, including batch processing, database-driven applications, and monitoring/alerting tools.
- Experience contributing to root-cause analysis, runbooks, and operational improvements.
- Familiarity with ITSM tools, monitoring platforms, and on-call support in a 24×7 production environment.
- Technology or platform certifications.
- Knowledge of insurance and Employee Benefits business concepts.
Working Conditions

Compensation
The Salary for this position generally ranges between $111,000 - $135,000 annually. Please note that the salary range is a good faith estimate for this position and actual starting pay is determined by several factors including qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote) and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law.
Additionally, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at the Company's discretion.

This is a hybrid position requiring three days in office per week in one of our hub locations (Philadelphia, PA; Cedar Rapids, IA; Denver, CO). Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.
