SUMMARY
The Associate Scientist – Applied Research supports the development of new technologies that deliver specific functionality in dairy and dairy-type flavors. The work focuses on the biochemical transformation (bioconversion) of raw materials by leveraging enzymes (enzyme-based conversions) and microorganisms (microbial conversion). The resulting materials enable the development of new and advanced taste and product solutions by Flavorists and Application Scientists.
The Associate Scientist – Applied Research also conducts scientific research and consults with other experts in new taste and processing technologies. The position identifies commercial opportunities of new ingredients and recommends new process technologies.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
•Execute research to support the development of new dairy taste technologies.
•Prioritize and manage commercial and research projects according to expected deliverables and research plans.
•Apply established research processes and methodologies, experimental design (DOE), and scientific problem solving.
•Create batches of compounds and support their sensory characterization and chemical analysis, as required.
•Support product shelf-life studies.
•Support the process of recommending new raw materials by studying consumer requirements and manufacturing capabilities; help to determine cost/ benefit relationships.
•Understand the specifications of food ingredients used in the manufacturing of new taste technologies.
•Understand ingredient systems and technologies by assisting in the evaluation of current versus new or improved processes.
•Assist in the identification and analysis of root causes of problems in manufacturing processes and ingredients; suggest ideas for process improvements.
•Maintain appropriate records of research work for future reference and knowledge building.
•Collaborate in the writing of technical papers, as required.
•Display high-level of curiosity and seek new opportunities for learning.
•Protect IP assets by maintaining confidentiality.
•Maintain safe and clean environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, and good manufacturing practices.
•Assist with pilot trials, both pilot plant scale and production scale.•
Implement new laboratory techniques with proper understanding of their application in various research projects.
•Maintain necessary inventory of samples and raw materials with up-to-date inventory records.
•Facilitate discussions within project teams.
•Expand formal and informal networks for professional knowledge and idea sharing.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum BS degree in Food Science or related field. Professional experience in the food, food ingredients, or flavor industry would be a plus.

MATHEMATICS SKILLS
Ability to:
•Compute in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

•Understand basic statistics for processing research derived data.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to:

COMPUTER SKILLS
Working knowledge of:
•Microsoft office and ability to learn and use all internal business software.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job:
•The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit.
•The employee must be able to operate a keyboard, calculator, and telephone.
•Operate various pieces of lab equipment and pilot scale equipment relevant to the flavor and food industry.
•Accurately measure to 1/1000th of a gram.
•Work at a bench approximately 38” high.
•Reach cabinets or equipment controls up to 7’ high.
•Manually stir or mix ingredients during preparation if necessary.
•Lift up to 60 lbs.
•Climb a ladder or a stepladder to facilitate the assembly, disassemble and cleaning of pilot plant equipment.
•Move freely about laboratory area including through doorways and aisles measuring a minimum of 30 inches in width.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
•The work location is a traditional lab setting.
•Daily environmental conditions are “normal” in an environmentally controlled building.
•On occasion the job does require the use of flammable and/or corrosive chemicals, which can be harmful if not utilized in a proper environment with proper safety considerations.
Job Benefits
Salary range: $55,000 to $65,000, based on experience and qualifications.
