Communications Manager
The Communications Manager drives strategic internal and external communications for WGU's School of Business, including leadership communications, content creation, and event support. Reporting to the Director of Academic Communications and serving as an integral member of the Communications team, this role is responsible for developing and executing compelling narratives for the School of Business across traditional and digital media, managing public relations efforts, and managing internal communications.
The Manager drafts and edits a variety of high-impact communications, including speeches, press releases, talking points, internal memos, digital content, and social media, and contributes to the planning and promotion of conferences, media outreach, and special events. This position will promote a positive image of WGU to the media, general public, specialized communities, employers, educators, students, and prospective students through effective use of media. This role works closely with the Regional Communications, PR, Marketing, Partnerships, and Alumni teams at WGU to ensure consistency in brand and message.
Major responsibilities of the position include securing positive ongoing press coverage, identifying and developing owned content stories for WGU's internal and external channels, driving daily messaging for various leaders, potentially managing a PR agency, serving as university spokesperson as well as constantly writing and generating content for news, social media, op-eds, blogs, and WGU online presence.
Knowledge, skills, and strengths include exceptional written and oral communication skills, understanding of the higher education environment, demonstrated skill and ability with social media and communication tools, familiarity with media relations practices, ability to conceptualize projects and manage multiple priorities, strategic thinker, detail-oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines, competent and confident professional demeanor, works well in a team environment, and ability to manage shifting priorities in a dynamic environment.
Competencies include ability to work with stakeholders across an organization to collaboratively achieve objectives, ability to collect and connect pertinent information, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and ability to identify issues, assess impact, and determine appropriate communication strategy.
Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, marketing, public relations, or related field and minimum five years of experience in media, public relations, marketing, or communications within a higher education and/or a business environment. Preferred qualifications include experience working in higher education, experience working within the business industry, experience working as a media reporter or public relations practitioner, and experience in lieu of education.
Physical qualifications include prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Travel requirements include up to 25%.
