Job description

Environmental Health & Safety Manager

Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety, the Environmental Health & Safety Manager will ensure compliance with federal, state, local government and industry standards. Emphasis is on environmental regulations, hazardous materials, safety, interim life safety, waste water, indoor environmental quality, asbestos compliance, fire/life safety, OSHA/EPA and other relevant regulatory programs. This position will be expected to work toward developing, implementing and assessing site compliance with internal standards, regulatory agencies, and other national guidelines and standards. Utilizes working knowledge of EHS regulatory compliance through observation and functional analytical skills to identify, review and assess compliance. Performs risk assessments of research laboratory and summarizes key aspects of regulatory statutes in format for reports to department management. Additionally supports risk assessments of clinical areas to manage Joint Commission (JC) and Environment of Care (EC) industry standards. Strong communications and cross team collaborations across departments and amongst clinical staff in advancing initiatives. This position works independently and/or under the daily direction of the EHS Director to implement programs and technical tasks while routinely collaborating with other EHS staff to ensure continuous coverage of all department duties. Participates in committee/subcommittee meetings and may lead EC/Safety specific recurring meetings. Coordinates committee findings and communicates to appropriate department representatives. In this role, you will perform the below listed essential duties and responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

  • Manages EHS programs in accordance with federal, state and local government and regulatory agency policies and standards including OSHA, MA DEP, MWRA, NFPA, etc. Performs inspections across the hospital to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Participates in and may lead EC/Safety meetings where necessary.
  • Manages chemical safety and compliance programs including hazardous materials, waste water, research safety, IACUC reviews and hazardous material response. Implements programs to ensure adherence with federal, state and local regulations. Manages regulatory reports for MA DEP and MWRA such as source registration, waste water permits, Tier II, etc.
  • Manages EHS program requirements such as permit required confined spaces, lockout tagout and asbestos compliance. Actively provides field training to various departments in OSHA mandated safety programs such as confined spaces, lockout tagout, asbestos compliance and maintenance general safety training.
  • Manages projects and is a primary resource/contact with Facilities, Maintenance Operations, other departments and contractors to assure a thorough EHS evaluation of facility-related projects with follow-up as required. Leads and coordinates response with other support departments to resolve issues.
  • Responsible for exposure monitoring related to industrial hygiene, chemical and other environmental exposures. Analyzes site findings and potential hazard control methods and develops, in conjunction with the EHS Director, recommendations to ensure continued worker and patient safety.
  • Utilizes a working knowledge of MA DEP/OSHA/NFPA regulations to develop policies and procedures. Develops and delivers training programs specific to EHS topics. Actively works in the field communicating policies to various research laboratories and clinical departments as part of PACE rounding and follow-up for findings.
  • Develops, implements and maintains hospital-wide hazard and safety surveillance program to review and ensure compliance with EHS regulatory requirements. Acts as a team leader in the hospital-wide hazard surveillance program (PACE) and conducts routine visits of all areas to review and ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory safety requirements. Ensures effective communication of audit results. Leads team plans for correction as appropriate while collaborating with Facilities, Maintenance Operations, other departments and contractors to ensure thorough participation and team work.
  • Supports the emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Responds to fire (Code Red) /chemical spills (Code Hazardous Material Event (Spill) ) during normal office hours and off-hours as well. May be required to work off-hours, respond to urgent matters, and will participate in managing other junior EHS team members in implementing and assuring overall site EHS program requirements. Will be required to share in the on-call pager. Supports additional duties as needed related to EHS/JC/EC to ensure coverage of all EHS department duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree Field of study: industrial hygiene, public health, emergency management, natural & physical sciences or relatable degree. 3-5 years of related EHS experience with a minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
  • Demonstrated commitment and actions to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Must be adaptable to field work including inspections in multiple buildings and environments.

Assistance with the on-call pager.

Pay Range:

$100,006.00 USD - $134,992.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
