Senior Assistant Superintendent

The Senior Assistant Superintendent serves as a key leadership position within Agronomy, responsible for managing daily maintenance operations and providing continuity of leadership in the absence of the Superintendent or Director of Agronomy.

As part of the Agronomy Leadership team, your essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct and implement Dormie Network agronomy policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Serve as the lead decision-maker for daily agronomy operations in the absence of the Superintendent or Director of Agronomy, ensuring clear communication and operational continuity.
  • Supervise and manage the upkeep of the golf course property, including greens, tees, fairways, roughs, practice facilities, maintenance equipment, golf car fleet, open spaces, wooded areas, and unused acreage.
  • Supervise maintenance crews performing daily maintenance and project work, assisting with manual labor as necessary.
  • Instruct equipment operators on proper operation and care of mowing and maintenance equipment.
  • Supervise pesticide applications and calibrate, operate, and maintain application equipment as required.
  • Supervise and participate in the operation and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems, including pumps and controls.
  • Assist with hiring, training, and development of agronomy staff.
  • Monitor compliance with departmental purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and direct scheduling of all maintenance operations and staff assignments.
  • Support maintenance of equipment, facilities, and agronomy infrastructure.
  • Adheres to all Dormie Network policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demonstrate courteous, service-oriented behavior when interacting with members, guests, and fellow employees.
  • Work collaboratively with all employees to support an efficient and positive team environment.

Leads a service-first culture and reinforces hospitality standards by ensuring agronomic excellence supports exceptional course conditions and the overall member experience.

Sets the standard for professionalism and accountability within the agronomy team.

Communicates clearly, confidently, and professionally, both verbally and in writing, across agronomy staff, Club leadership, and external partners.

Demonstrates strong administrative and organizational discipline in directing daily maintenance operations, project coordination, and resource planning.

Manages time strategically and ensures agronomic priorities and seasonal objectives are executed efficiently.

Applies advanced analytical thinking and decisive problem-solving to complex turf, environmental, and operational challenges.

Exercises sound judgment in course conditioning decisions and operational planning.

Exhibits strong supervisory and leadership abilities, establishing clear expectations and performance standards.

Effectively prioritizes departmental initiatives and delegates responsibilities to drive accountability and consistent execution.

Operates independently with minimal supervision while maintaining alignment with the Superintendent on strategic goals.

Possesses advanced working knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, including turf management for greens, tees, fairways, and roughs.

Demonstrates deep understanding of seeding, fertilization, soil conditioning, irrigation, drainage, and pest management practices.

Knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of golf course equipment and tools.

Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or comparable software to support reporting, planning, and communication.

Understands and ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting golf course operations.

Maintains strict confidentiality when handling sensitive or proprietary information.

Demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of the game of golf and its direct connection to agronomic standards.

Performs effectively in a fast-paced and occasionally high-pressure environment.

Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends, holidays, and varying shifts based on Club operations.

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains agronomy staff as directed.
  • Oversees daily department operations and provides leadership to maintenance crews.
  • Associate's degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or equivalent senior assistant-level role required.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking, including on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, stretch, push, pull, and maneuver equipment as needed.
  • Ability to visually inspect machinery, materials, and course conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate local machinery when properly licensed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to operate a computer and standard office equipment.
