Controller

Controller Position

The Controller will lead the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for building strong accounting processes, producing timely and accurate financial information, protecting company assets, and providing practical analysis to support profitable growth. The Controller will work closely with ownership and operational leaders across production, dispatch, sales, and fleet operations.

Accounting and Financial Reporting

• Lead all general accounting activities, including the general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll accounting, cash management, and fixed assets.
• Manage the monthly and year-end close processes and prepare accurate, timely financial statements and management reporting.
• Establish and maintain effective internal controls, accounting policies, approval processes, and supporting documentation.
• Coordinate annual tax preparation and other financial reviews with outside CPAs, lenders, insurance providers, and other professional partners.
• Maintain compliance with applicable sales and use taxes, property taxes, payroll taxes, and other state and local reporting requirements.

Operational Accounting and Analysis

• Develop reliable product, delivery, plant, and fleet cost information to help management evaluate pricing, margins, and operating performance.
• Reconcile production and delivery activity, including customer orders, batch or load tickets, delivered yardage, pricing, and invoicing.
• Analyze revenue and gross margin by customer, project, product mix, plant, and other relevant operating measures.
• Monitor raw materials, admixtures, fuel, parts, and other inventory; strengthen purchasing, receiving, usage, and inventory-count procedures.
• Track trucks, loaders, plant equipment, and other fixed assets, including acquisitions, disposals, depreciation, repair costs, and capital spending.
• Partner with operations to identify trends and opportunities involving material yield, waste, overtime, fuel usage, truck utilization, maintenance, and delivery efficiency.

Planning, Cash Flow, and Risk Management

• Prepare the annual budget, rolling forecasts, cash flow projections, and capital expenditure plans.
• Manage daily cash activity, banking relationships, debt reporting, and lender requirements.
• Oversee customer credit, billing, collections, lien documentation, and aging; work with sales and operations to resolve disputes promptly.
• Support insurance renewals, workers' compensation reporting, and financial aspects of fleet, safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Provide ownership with clear financial analysis, operating metrics, and recommendations to support business decisions and growth initiatives.

Team and Process Leadership

• Lead, develop, and hold accountable the accounting and administrative team.
• Clarify roles, create repeatable procedures, and establish reasonable close and reporting deadlines.
• Evaluate accounting and operational systems and implement improvements that increase accuracy, visibility, and efficiency.
• Promote a collaborative, service-oriented approach between accounting and field operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required; CPA or CMA preferred.
• Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience, including experience leading a complete month-end close and preparing financial statements.
• Experience in ready-mix concrete, construction materials, manufacturing, trucking, heavy equipment, or a related operational business strongly preferred.
• Strong knowledge of cost accounting, inventory, fixed assets, budgeting, cash flow, and internal controls.
• Demonstrated ability to improve processes and use accounting and operational systems effectively.
• Advanced Excel skills and the ability to translate financial data into clear, useful information for non-financial leaders.
• Strong organization, judgment, communication, and follow-through, with a willingness to work at both the strategic and detailed levels.

• Accurate monthly financial statements and operating reports are delivered consistently and on time.
• Ownership has clear visibility into cash flow, profitability, costs, working capital, and capital needs.
• Billing, collections, inventory, purchasing, and fixed-asset controls are reliable and well documented.
• Operations leaders receive meaningful information that helps them improve margins and make better decisions.
• The accounting function is scalable, responsive, and prepared to support the company's continued growth.
