Reports To: Mechanical Principal-in-ChargeLocation: Minneapolis, MN Anticipated Starting Salary: $90,000.00 - $120,000.00 annually, based on experienceExperience: 7+ years - mid-level and senior candidates both encouraged to applyThe RoleSteen Engineering is looking for an experienced Commissioning Agent to make sure the systems we design perform exactly as intended, from startup through long-term operation. You'll act as the technical partner connecting project teams, contractors, building owners, and design professionals - validating performance, troubleshooting issues, and closing the gap between design intent and real-world results. Beyond the technical work, you'll build client relationships, mentor emerging professionals, and help grow Steen's commissioning practice.Why This Role MattersThe best projects don't end at construction completion - they begin when systems perform reliably in the real world. As a Commissioning Agent at Steen, your work directly impacts:Building performance and energy efficiencyOccupant comfort and safetyProject quality and risk reductionClient trust and long-term relationshipsWhat You'll DoCommissioning & Building PerformanceReview and reconcile Owner's Project Requirements (OPR) and Basis of Design (BOD) documents.Develop commissioning plans and functional performance test procedures.Create functional testing scripts from controls drawings and operational sequences.Perform functional testing of HVAC equipment and building systems for new construction and retro-commissioning projects.Validate equipment operation, system integration, and controls performance.Work with contractors, controls vendors, and site personnel to resolve issues and optimize performance.Project Leadership & Client ServiceLead commissioning activities from kickoff through occupancy and post-construction support.Serve as a trusted point of contact for owners, architects, contractors, and stakeholders.Coordinate commissioning schedules, priorities, and deliverables across multiple projects.Manage scope, schedule, and resources while flagging risks early.Technical Collaboration & Quality AssuranceCollaborate with design teams on project goals and system performance requirements.Review drawings, specifications, controls sequences, and submittals for commissioning compliance.Participate in peer reviews and QA processes.Practice Growth (as you grow into the role)Build client relationships that contribute to repeat business.Mentor junior team members.Identify opportunities to expand commissioning services.What You'll BringBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).7+ years of experience in commissioning, mechanical engineering, HVAC design, building systems, or project management.Experience with central plant systems, HVAC controls and building automation systems.Solid understanding of applicable building codes, standards, and construction practices.Strong communication and relations-building skills.Nice to HaveCommissioning certification (BCxP, CxA, CCP, or similar) - or willingness to obtain one.Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.Experience mentoring junior staff or supporting business developmentpensation & BenefitsBase salary: $90,000–$120,000, commensurate with experienceHealth, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) or retirement plan + match PTO/holiday policy Professional development and certification reimbursement Hybrid schedule optionalTeam SteenWe're looking for people who are humble enough to listen, hardworking enough to dig in, and practical enough to get things done.
